SAEHP Press Release
6 June 2024
Exports to the EU – update
On 25 March 2024, South African Equine Health and Protocols (SAEHP) announced, in conjunction with the South African Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD), that DALRRD has received official notification that the reinstatement of direct exports of registered horses from South Africa to the European Union (EU) has been approved.
This notification followed an amendment to Annex IV of the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/404, placing South Africa’s African Horse Sickness (AHS) Free Zone back on the Annex IV list as a zone within South Africa from which registered horses are authorised for direct entry into the EU.
The SAEHP announcement of 25 March also noted the this EU amendment will come into effect after publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, which was subsequently published on 30 April 2024 when the European Commission published Regulation EU 2024/1170, updating Annex IV of EU 2021/404. This regulation permits direct export of horses from South Africa to the EU, effective from 20 May 2024, with specific newly included conditions incorporated by the EU, summarised below:
- Zone ZA-1 (South Africa’s AHS Free Zone) and the current AHS Surveillance and Protection Zones in the Western Cape must be maintained. These combined zones are the AHS controlled area and controls must include movement control into and within this area, as well as surveillance with notification and control of AHS infection should it occur; and
- No AHS vaccination is allowed in Zone ZA-1 (the Free Zone) and the surrounding Surveillance Zone.
The EU requirement of no vaccination in the Free Zone and the Surveillance Zone means no AHS vaccinations in these two zones for trade to commence. SAEHP is working with the South African Veterinary authorities to implement a road map to facilitate the movement of equines resident in the Free and Surveillance zones. SAEHP will contact stakeholders in the near future to discuss the effects of this EU requirement and to arrange a joint working session to work on the above road map.
In the meantime, those persons wishing to export equines should contact Cape Racing, the operator of the Free Zone quarantine centre at Kenilworth race course, to schedule their entry into quarantine. In addition to the requisite testing, horses will require 40 days residence in the Free Zone and at least 14 days in the Kenilworth quarantine centre in order to qualify for export.

Main Defender and Sandringham Summit to clash in the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge
🎤Trainer / Jockey Comments
🏇3. MAIN DEFENDER : “His work back home has been really good. He did a nice gallop over 1200m … it would have brought him on perfectly. Lovely to be drawn closer to the inside. I think it’s a really good field, but we believe in him and looking forward to riding him on Saturday”, Calvin Habib.
🏇4. SANDRINGHAM SUMMIT : “His recovery (from the WSB Guineas) was quick and good from that race. His training sessions have gone well into this race. This Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge has attracted a powerful field of group winning horses, making it one of the best races of the season. We expect another first-class performance”, David Nieuwenhuizen.
🏇11. LUCKY LAD : “He has taken his last run very well, even though this is a quick turnaround. He’s done everything right this week and we’re hoping for a big run again. Obviously a very deep draw and a strong field, but we expect him to be running on strongly”, Sean Tarry.
🏇9. SEE IT AGAIN : “He is doing very well at home and I am very happy. It’s a very competitive race on Saturday. Unfortunately, we haven’t got the best of draws, but I still expect a very good showing from him. This is probably a bit on the short side for him and I expect good improvement from him in going forward”, Michael Roberts.
🏇10. SNOW PILOT : “He’s a character and a tank of a horse. I’ve gone hard on him. He’s doing the work of the other horses, but it’s not enough for him. Its testament to the individual. He’s coming in fit and ready. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him win … a horse you have to respect, but a very tough field”, Justin Snaith.
🏇6. DAVE THE KING : “He’s definitely got stronger mentally and physically. I personally think the mile is his best. He’s a big striding horse … he’s tough. He can go just about anywhere and give a good account of himself”, Craig Zackey who rode him in his last race.
🏇2. COUSIN CASEY : “He was unlucky not to have won the Drill Hall. He’s taken that run very well and his preparation has gone exceptionally well. Great draw of 2 and S’Managa Khumalo retains the ride. I do expect him to give a massive run. I’m mindful that this is a very tough race. It’s one of the strongest renewals I’ve seen in the last few years. Whilst we’re up against it, he’s ready for it”, Sean Tarry.
🏇8. ROYAL AUSSIE : “He’s a gutsy horse and a fantastic miler. Unfortunately, we’ve had a hiccup and he’s a doubtful starter. He’s picked up a bug. He’s fine, but certainly not what you want happen in the week of a group 1. His welfare comes first, so if we feel like we’re going to scratch him, we may just do that”, Justin Snaith.

“I think we’re all racing for second”, Piere Strydom, jockey of Humdinger.
Trainer / Jockey Comments
🏇8. DOUBLE GRAND SLAM : “She’s comes back to the 1400m. She seems deadly over the distance. She beat the group 1 South African Fillies Sprint winner (October Morn) over the distance by 3 ½ lengths (in the SplashOut Prix du Cap Gr3). If everything is just chilled on the day … quiet and everything goes fine, she’s certainly one of the better bets on the card”, Justin Snaith.
🏇5. HUMDINGER : “I think Hollywoodbets Greyville over the 1400m, is right up her ally. She’s well handicapped, except for the filly that Richard Fourie is riding (Double Grand Slam). She’s drawn on the outside, which will give us some advantage, but I think we’re racing for 2nd. Obviously trying the hardest to win, with a lot in our favour, but it looks as if Richard Fourie’s filly might be too strong for us”, Piere Strydom.
🏇3. CELTIC RUMOURS : “She’s had a good preparation. She has a plum draw of 3 and has campaigned successfully over her last few starts, in some very good company. Gavin Lerena is unbeaten on the filly. Even though this is a tough field, I believe she’ll be right there”.
🏇1. BAVARIAN BEAUTY : “The Tony Peter filly will be looking to regain the form which saw her win the Grade 1 Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes at the end of Champions Season last year. Has drawn pole with regular jockey Calvin Habib in irons”, Racing News.
🏇2. GIMME A SHOT : “Four time winner from 1200 -1600m. Has previously raced at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Is backing up her unlucky run in the grade 1 South African Fillies Sprint just a week ago at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. Has a good draw of 2, with Muzi Yeni in the irons who has won on her before”, Racing News.
🏇6. JUST BE LEKKER : “It’s nice to see her get her confidence back again (she won a MR96 Divided Hcp last time out). With that confidence behind her, she can carry on”, Candice Dawson.
🏇9. HAPPY CHANCE : “This is a preparation race for the Garden Province on July Day. On her work and well-being, I definitely think you can’t count her out on the day”, James Crawford.

Today’s Question
The picture shows the subject horse (wikipedia)
Which 1000 Guineas winner has a race named after her in both England and South Africa?
Midweek FIELDS
Fairview Poly, Friday
Today’s Question Answer
Diadem (1914–1931) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1000 Guineas in 1917. She went on to become a top sprinter, recording two victories in both the King’s Stand Stakes and the July Cup. In total she won 24 of her 39 races. Diadem was bred and owned by Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount D’Abernon, and trained by George Lambton. The Diadem Stakes at Ascot Racecourse was named after her and it is presumed the Diadem Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth is also named after her.
