Can Record-Breaking Silvano Add To July Record?
Team Valor's Ebony Flyer Colt By Kingman Runs At Newmarket

Team Valor International have been partners with Gaynor Rupert in the breeding career of three-time Gr 1-winning SA-bred Jet Master mare Ebony Flyer and this mare has a promising Kingman colt who will represent Team Valor at Newmarket on Friday (17 May).
On April 28 the Kingman colt T’Challa ran second on debut on the Southwell All Weather over a mile and he now runs in a Novice Stakes event over a mile on the Rowley Mile.
The Andrew Balding-trained colt will be ridden by Kevin Stott and is 3/1 second favourite behind the Godolphon colt Creative Story (Too Darn Hot).
The race jumps at 15H53 SA time.
Ebony Flyer was one of the most talented fillies to ever race in South Africa, but was unable to reach her full potential due to a breathing issue.
The Jet Master filly was one of only two horses to ever beat the great Igugu on South African soil, doing so in the Gr 1 Cape Fillies Guineas in December 2010.
She had to have a tie back operation after a subseuqent third place finish in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, which meant she missed the Champions Season in her three-year-old career.
However, she came back to win more races, including the Gr 1 Majorca Stakes and Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint.
She was trained by Justin Snaith and raced by Team Valor.
She has been a bit of a disappointment at stud.
Her best runner to date has been Cot Campbell (Trippi), who was bred by Drakenstein Stud and Team Valor in partnership and raced by that partnership too. He won one race and finished fourth in both the Gr 1 Cape Guineas and CTS 1600 and was third in a Gr 3 before departing for Hong Kong, where he was unsuccessful.
Ebony Flyer’s son Captain Of Tortuga by Captain Al won four times.
Ebony Flyer also had a three time-winning Silvano filly called Black Silver who was a Listed runner up.
Her only other runner in the UK to date besides T’Challa has been a Dark Angel filly who has run one fourth in six starts.
T’Challa was officially bred by Gaynor Rupert’s UK breeding partnership Cayton Park Stud in partnership with Team Valor and Cad Racing.
Barnane Stud/Heffer First-Timer At Newbury Is Well Bred
Wild Clary’s half-brother Cunco was Frankel’s first foal and became his first runner and first winner when winning on debut in the same race that Wild Clary runs in on Friday. (Picture: The Times)
The Barnane Stud and Owen Heffer-owned Wild Clary, who makes his debut at 16H00 SA Time on Friday 17 May at Newbury, is superbly bred.
He is by Dark Angel, a Gr 1 Middle Park Stakes (6 furlongs) winner who has become known as a leading sire of sprinters.
He is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Chrysanthemum, who won two Gr 3s from seven furlongs to a mile and three Listed races from a mile to a mile-and-two-furlongs.
That makes him a half-brother to the four-year-old Joseph O’Brien-trained Frankel filly Maxux, who in six starts has already won a Gr 3 over a mile-and-a-furlong and has had an official rating as high as 109.
Wild Clary is also a half-brother to the former John Gosden-trained Frankel entire Cunco, who was in fact Frankel’s first ever foal, his first ever runner and his first ever winner, winning on debut at Newbury on May 13, 2016.
It is not surprising Wild Clary appears at the Newbury meeting because he runs in exactly the same six furlong maiden race Cunco made his debut in, so history might repeat itself.
Cunco went on to win a Gr 3 over a mile-and-a-half at Sandown as a three-year-old and today stands as a stallion in Chile.
Chrysanthemum has had five runners and four winners.
Wild Clary should be a good prospect.
He is trained by Richard Hannon and will be ridden by Sean Levey in Friday’s six furlong maiden event for two-year-olds and was generally a 14/1 chance.
Tower To Hit Yorkshire Cup Heights
Tower Of London can rise above his rivals on the Knavesmire to lift the Boodles Yorkshire Cup.
Aidan O’Brien’s four-year-old made his winter travels to the Middle East a worthwhile venture when landing both the Red Sea Turf Handicap in Riyadh and the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan.
Those lucrative triumphs came ahead of some respected performers and were a step forward on his European form from last summer.
The peak of that segment of his career was a fourth-placed run in the St Leger, where his stablemate Continuous may have been the clear winner but the placed horses finished fairly well bunched.
After some longer distance efforts since, Tower Of London drops down to 2800m and looks the horse to beat under Ryan Moore.
On the same card, Running Queen can take the Clipper EBF Marygate Fillies’ Stakes at Listed level for Sam Sangster and Oisin Murphy.
The Kingman-filly was the winner of a Salisbury conditions race when last seen in early May, a smart 1.25-length success on soft ground that tees her up nicely for a step up in grade.
The other Listed contest on the card is the Sky Bet Fillies’ Stakes, where Charlie Appleby’s Devoted Queen catches the eye on her third career start.
Another daughter of Kingman out of multiple Group race-winning mare Fintry, her two prior outings ended in success as she took a Newmarket maiden by a good margin last year and returned to action in April to win on the all-weather at Kempton.
Now returned to turf, she looks poised to take the next step in her career under William Buick.
Newbury punters are advised to side with Diligently in the ARC & Sky Sports Racing Support Starlight Maiden Stakes.
There was plenty of chatter about Clive Cox’s juvenile prior to his racecourse introduction at Ascot a couple of weeks ago and by the time the gates opened, he was a 2-1 favourite.
Diligently’s supporters were ultimately left counting their losses, with the Harry Angel colt beaten 2-lengths into fourth place, but he should improve for the run and deserves a second chance.
Mount Teide is another who can confirm debut promise in the Starlight Express Novice Stakes.
Andrew Balding’s three-year-old was a big price at 25-1 at Newmarket’s Craven meeting, but hit the front at one stage before being caught close home by a trio of rivals.
Mount Teide was beaten just 0.75-length by Frankel’s half-brother Kikkuli and he can only progress.
In Ireland there is Group Three action in the Saval Beg Levmoss Stakes, where O’Brien has the key contender in Kyprios.
Once appearing to be the champion-elect in the staying division with a string of Group One successes in 2022, including the Gold Cup, the Goodwood Cup and the Irish St Leger, the chestnut has since been hindered by injury.
His winning streak may have been interrupted but his talent clearly remains and a Listed win in the Vintage Crop at Navan was a good way to return in late April.
This is a level up but in a small field, he is a clear choice and should not find too much hardship in the assignment if he can tap into the ability he has shown in abundance previously. – Press Association

Tricky Racing On The Polytrack At Fairview
Passchendale has been tipped to win the 7th (Pauline Herman Photography)
Jack Milner (Tab4Racing)
It is not always easy to find winners on the Fairview Polytrack and it is even more so in handicaps but three runners do provide some hope for bettors at Friday’s meeting.
The first of them comes up in Race 4, a MR 68 Handicap over 1900m where the improving Puerto Plata can score again.
The mount of jockey Richard Fourie looked an unlucky loser last time when beaten 0.25 lengths by rival Harold The Duke.
Both were tasting the Polytrack for the first time that day, but Argentinian-bred Puerto Plata was badly drawn and came from a long way back to challenge late.
Puerto Plata will get his chance to avenge that defeat as they meet again in this race.
There was not too much between them in their penultimate start as well which went the way of Puerto Plata by 0.25 lengths on the turf, so the 1kg pull plus the fact Puerto Plata is better drawn this time could see him get the better of his rival.
Passchendaele showed of what she is capable with a fluent win the last time she saw the Polytrack, which was in her penultimate start, and was not disgraced last time out when just 3.25 lengths behind class sprinting filly Three Rocks.
Jockey S’manga Khumalo knows how to get the best out of this Kelly Mitchley-trained filly and a positive ride should pay dividends in Race 7, a MR 86 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1300m, from No 4 draw.
In Race 8, a MR 71 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1300m, juvenile Can’t Say No could provide the value.
She won well last time and although Fourie, Alan Greeff’s first-choice jockey, will be on Concerto, the younger filly might upstage them. She won her maiden over 1400m on this surface by seven lengths and can only improve on that performance.

The United States Double At The Vaal
The Mark Khan-trained Kashkaval won the last race under Nathan Klink and gave the stallion The United States a double on the day. (JC Photos)
The Galileo stallion The United States was the only double scorer at the Vaal meeting today.
His first winner of the day, the Sean Tarry-trained Rodeo Drive, looks promising and being a maiden brought him another individual winner for the season and his second winner was the Mark Khan-trained Kashkaval.
Before the meeting his winner to runners percentage was 41.3% from 75 runners and Kashkaval gave him his 46th win of the season.
Today’s Question
The historic premises pictured above are in Middleham Yorkshire and are presently the home of Neil Mechie racing.
Which famous 1940s horse was stabled here?
Midweek FIELDS
Hollywoodbets Greyville Poly, Wednesday
Today’s Question Answer
The yard above was the home of Dante, who was the last Northern England-based horse to win the Derby.
Dante’s Derby win in 1945 took place at Newmarket, which was the venue for the war years and remained there that year despite the war being over.
