Winchester Mansion On Track For Summer Cup

The Brett Crawford-trained Hollywoodbets Durban July hero Winchester Mansion has had two grass gallops and will run in the Gr 2 Allied Steelrode On A Mission Charity Mile on his way to the Gr 1 Betway Summer Cup.
He was given a break after his July heroics, but Crawford is not concerned about the Summer Cup coming too soon.
He said, “He’s doing fine and we’ve been happy with his progress so far. Luckily I think he is quite a versatile type of a horse. He’s had the two grass gallops and he’ll have a run. After that we’ll see. But he’s going well and I’m not too concerned (about the Summer Cup coming too soon). I think he will be fine.”
The Trippi gelding won the July off a 112 merit rating, although he was half-a-kilogram under sufferance, and he was raised nine points to 121.
So it will be tougher this time, but he has become particularly progressive since gelding, finishing second in a comeback from a layoff and then reeling off two impressive victories including in the big one, the July.
Crawford said, “He’s a five-year-old now, so he should be strong enough. It’s just a question of him making further progress , which I actually think he will do.”
The yard has four Summer Cup entries, the other three being 118 rated Billy Bowlegs, 101 rated Crimson King and 98 rated Solar Power.
Four-year-old The United States colt Billy Bowlegs was bought at the BSA September Online Sale for R1,760,000 and is now owned by Messrs T Gujadhur, J F & L M F Wernars & Nick & Val McFall.
He had his first run for the Crawford yard last Saturday, having not run since finishing a 7,10 length eleventh in the July.
He finished 9 lengths back in a Pinnacle event over 1600m.
However, Brett said, “We always knew he was going to need it, coming off a break and his vaccines etc. I would have liked him to have run a bit closer but he did need it badly and the grass facilities at Randjes have only just opened. He should come on nicely and he will run in the Victory Moon and then in the Summer Cup.

Beaumont’s Trio Sure To Impress at RTR & 2YO Unbroken Sale
Distributed by: Cape Racing
Anton Shepherd’s Beaumont Stud averaged over R213,000 apiece for three foals at last
year’s Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run and Two-Year-Old Unbroken Sale, and with three more quality lots, he’ll be looking for similarly good results at this year’s renewal, scheduled for Hollywoodbets Durbanville on 22 October.
Pre-trained by Bass Racing, here are some briefs on this year’s Beaumont Stud trio:
Lot 17 Marine Merchant (b c Captain Of All – In Limine) (Pictured above headline)
“He is a half-brother to the very promising and highly rated Red Palace (see next article in the newsletter) and is developing into a smashing colt. He has a magnificent action with scope and class and is a must for the shortlist!”
Lot 46 Johnny Drama (ch c What A Winter – Selkie) (Pictured below)
“He’s a very attractive and handsome colt from the super Western Winter/Caesour cross.
He stems from one of South Africa’s best families in Irridecence and Perfect Promise, and his dam has produced many winners.

Lot 65 Doja Cat (ch f The United States – Welsh Kitten) (Pictured below)
“Doja Cat is a very athletic filly from the United States from the great family of Marinaresco
and Marina. She shows a lot, looks very racy and will come to hand early.”

Impressive Red Palace Being Aimed At Cape Fillies Guineas
Red Palace is in a race of her own as she cruises in over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Monday (Picture: Wayne Marks)
The Candice Bass-Robinson-trained Potala Palace filly Red Palace followed up on her 5,25 length maiden win over 1600m by winning in effortless fashion over the same Hollywoodbets Durbanville 1600m course and distance on Monday.
She raced off an 85 merit rating in the class 4 handicap and could have won by ten lengths instead of the official 3,50 lengths.
Candice said today about her being a classic prospect, “I hope so. She was impressive, but it is obviously quite a step up still.”
She said she would avoid the Gr 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship, because she did not want to put her back over 1400m and would instead find another race for her before going for the Gr 1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas on December 2.
On Monday Aldo Domeyer took her to the front from draw 8 out of ten and she set what was probably a faster gallop pace than it looked because she looks to have a good natural cruising speed.
This became evident in the straight when she pulled further and further clear despite just being held together and then ridden with the hands at the 200m mark.
When Domeyer looked around to discover he was in another parish just before the 100m mark he knew he would be able to ease her down and he began doing so shortly after passing the 50m mark.
It was her fifth career run and she looks set to be a classic campaigner.
Her half-brother by Captain Of All is on the Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run and 2Yo Unbroken Sale at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday.

Precocious types in strong Ridgemont draft
Lot 58 is a Canford Cliffs filly who is out of a Captain Al half-sister to Russian Sage
Distributed by: Cape Racing
Ridgemont Stud will present 11 choice lots at the 2023 Cape Racing Ready To Run and
Two-Year-Old Unbroken Sale at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday, 22 October.
Ridgemont’s Julia Kieswetter highlighted five two-year-olds she believes are desirable
prospects and shared her thoughts below:
Lot 58 Happy Wives (b f Canford Cliffs x Three Blue Cranes) (Pictured above headline)
“She is out of a Captain Al mare, a half-sister to Russian Sage. Happy Wives herself is a
half-sister to the impressive Dynasty filly Happy Chance. She shares many similarities with
her sister: she is very strong with a lovely, powerful hind end. She is level-headed and will be early to the track. With these wonderful juvenile incentives, she will be a nice filly to buy as the return on investment will be quick.”
Lot 56 Golden Rule (b c Canford Cliffs x Takingthepeace) (Pictured below)
“Another exciting prospect by Canford Cliffs, Golden Rule is a striking second foal of the
unforgettable G1-winning Visionaire mare, Takingthepeace. He is a strong colt that is a real
head-turner. Beautifully balanced, he easily takes his work with an easy canter and nice
scope. Certainly, one to watch.”

Lot 45 Under Wraps (gr f Danon Platina x Secret Society) (Pictured below)
“By Danon Platina, who is certainly firing on all cylinders, from the family of Biarritz and
Outstanding Star, Under Wraps is a quick and punchy sprinting type that will be quick to the track. She is strong from her shoulder through to her hind quarter. She will hit the ground running out of the already proven mare Secret Society.”

Lot 4 Gondolaonthemolo (b f Lancaster Bomber x Dolomiti) (Pictured below)
“By the late Lancaster Bomber, she is a lovely filly with plenty of scope. Level-headed and
easy to work with, she takes everything into her stride without a bother. She is improving
daily in her work. The future will be very exciting for her.”

Lot 20 Comedy Club (b c Canford Cliffs – Joking) (Pictured below)
“Out of the Listed winning mare Joking, Comedy Club is the smart son of Canford Cliffs. An
easy-mover who is correct and balanced will be popular.

Today’s Question Answer
In the royal visit to Greyville in 1947, a 14-year-old Durban Girls College school girl called Alizanne Orr was chosen to present a bouquet of flowers to Princess Elizabeth.
In the royal visit to Greyville in 1995 Alizanne’s grandson Matthew Nel repeated the gesture.
Alizanne had become involved in racing through her husband Dr Nic Labuschagne, who had for many years been a steward of the Durban Turf Club as well as a former chairman, so Alizanne got to meet the by now Queen Elizabeth again.
