Royal Victory Proves Himself Special
Royal Victory (far side) wins the Michaelmas under Calvin Habib (Picture: Candiese Lenferna)
It takes a special horse to come from the back on the tight Hollywoodbets Greyville straight in a feature race with topweight to win and that is what the Nathan Kotzen-trained Royal Victory achieved in Sunday’s PinkDrive Non-Black Type Michaelmas Handicap over 1900m, in which he carried a welter burden of 61,5kg under Calvin Habib.
It was an emotional moment for part owner PJ Victor because the Pink Drive meeting dedicated to cancer awareness fell on the eighth anniversary of him losing his daughter to the dreaded disease.
PJ part-owns Royal Victory together with PJ Victor and Natasha Sturdy.
PJ was partly behind the decision to send Royal Victory over further.
He said after the race he was looking forward to a run in the R5 million Betway Summer Cup over 2000m on November 25 at Turffontein Standside, now that the horse has matured and proved he enjoys middle distances.
Royal Victory was not among the first entries in the Summer Cup, so watch for his name being added before second entries close on October 31.
Kotzen had his doubts about the trip on Sunday and therefore removed the blinkers.
Nathan also felt Royal Victory had been a bit too handy in his last couple of starts.
The Pathfork gelding came from the back when running on strongly for a short-head second in the Gr 2 WSB Gauteng Guineas last season.
Royal Victory, bred by Dr Marianne Thompson’s Ambiance Stud, was duly left alone from draw two on Sunday and was in joint last place rounding the Drill Hall.
He was on the rail with just one behind him when they turned for home in the nine horse field.
He then ran on steadily in the straight on the inside rail and Habib managed to extract a late surge for him to get up by a head from fellow four-year-old Pirate Prince, to whom he gave 9,5kg.
Decent sorts Cape Eagle, Queue Wing and Addabar, whom he gave lumps of weight to, were next best in that order and beaten a neck, 1,50 and 2,25 lengths respectively.
Royal Victory ran off a merit rating of 108 and has been raised two points to 110.
23 of the 40 first entries in the Betway Summer Cup are merit rated either equal to that mark or higher, so he will have a good chance of making the final field of 20 runners.
However, with bottom weight set to be 54kg and the highest rated entry being fellow four-year-old Dave The King on 126, Royal Victory will go in 2kg under sufferance as things stand.
Dettori Criticised For “Fake Retirement”
The above artwork in Newmarket is one of a number commissioned by The Jockey Club and painted at key racing towns to mark Frankie Dettori’s 38-year racing career. (Picture: Edward Whittaker (Racing Post)).
The AidanOBrienFansite, which is unaffiliated and whose views are their own, is one entity who believe Frankie Dettori has cashed in on a retirement that has turned out to not be an overall retirement but rather just a retirement from British racing.
It should be reiterated that the great trainer Aidan O’Brien is not responsible for the views held and likely does not endorse anything said on the site, although it does provide information on anything to do with his yard.
The site tweeted last Thursday:”Retirement Dinner in London at £1200 per person you could not write it. He has more front than Blackpool Beach. He’s been great for racing and I have enjoyed the Frankie show over the years. This feels a bit scandalous and attention seeking. But, hey ho, only my opinion folks, no axe to grind here, just thinking out loud.”
Following some tweeters who disagreed with him, the person who runs the site replied,
“Guarantee he will ride in Europe next season.”
He tweeted on the subject again the following day, saying:
“I have received somewhat of a Backlash for my comments on Frankie yesterday. To be clear I have no axe to grind over the Frankie retirement tour and U Turn. I Like Frankie but the fact a lot of his fans think that he has done absolutely nothing wrong completely flummoxes me, but I was bought up by parents who valued ethics, taught me right from wrong and taught me that integrity is everything. If you can’t see anything wrong with cashing in on a fake retirement then good luck to you. All I know the whole thing does not sit easy with me at all. My last word on the episode.”
He did have one more telling comments though. He later tweeted:
“I read his kids moved to America ages ago, knowing he was going to ride there.”
He then turned it up into a harsher tone when repying to the following two tweets:
George: “I have to agree and I’m a big Frankie fan myself. The money he’s made from this stunt, some of his interviews make more sense now we know he’s off to America, as in many of them I was thinking he really didn’t look upset about retiring.”
Beamonesque Puts In A Beamonesque Display
The three-year-old picture perenially builds at this time of the season and there is always the chance that some of the perceived best performances turn out to be false alarms.
Mike de Kock said: “Beamonesque has a lot of pace, so much so that I won’t mind putting him in a 1000m race. I think we’ll keep him to sprinting for now. It’s too soon to make a call on him, we’ll need to see more, but he does give us the vibes of a horse that has a future. He reminds me a bit of (our international G1 winning sprinter) Shea Shea.”
Jockey Gavin Lerena said that Beamonesque had given him a nice feel: “He jumped well and switched off, did it like a gentleman. He’s a nice horse and this was a lovely win.”
Beamonesque races for Warne Rippon and Arun Chadha’s ASSM Syndicate, with Mathew de Kock, Corey Smith, Clint and James Prebble from Australia also involved, and Mike owning a share himself.
Said Corey, the communications manager for Mathew and training partner Robbie Griffiths at Cranbourne: “We watched the race live and were ecstatic. Clint is a lifelong racing supporter and a big fan of Mike and his crew. James works in racing, also, for Mathew Cumani who has another South African Jason May (formerly from Drakenstein) working for him. So we all shared a smile!”
Nick Jonsson-owned Zoustar Colt Impresses On Debut At Windsor
Mahato winning easily on debut (Picture: Royal Windsor racecourse)
The William Haggas-trained Zoustar colt Mahato made his debut over six furlongs at Windsor today (Monday) in a Novice Stakes event and carrying 9 stone 4 pounds, 7 pounds less than the only winner in the field, ran out a comfortable 2,25 length winner under Tom Marquand.
A Racing Post report on the meeting sub-headlined the horse as “Magic Mahato” and said, ”
William Haggas may have another classy runner to look forward to next year after Mahato created a fine impression when taking the 6f novice on his debut. Despite obvious greenness and a high head carriage, the colt travelled superbly before kicking clear under Tom Marquand, with two and a quarter lengths back to Ghaihaban, who made eyecatching late headway to nab second.”
