Cape Racing’s Exciting Syndication Scheme

Cape Racing has announced the launch of an industry-first exciting new syndication incentive program.

The initiative will be run through Cape Racing’s recently unveiled Cape Turf Club membership body.

The initiative is based on promoting ownership within the region and on expanding and transforming the ownership ranks.

OWNERS WITHIN A SYNDICATE WILL HAVE THE OPTION TO JOIN THE CAPE TURF CLUB AS SYNDICATE MEMBERS, IF THEY ARE NOT NHA COLOUR HOLDERS.

There will be a series of bonus initiatives attached to the program.

The bonuses will incentivize the owners of each horse within the syndicate and the syndicate managers. Cape Racing believes that this program will help facilitate career opportunities for prospective bloodstock agents and syndicators.

Justin Vermaak, Cape Racing’s head of Racing & Bloodstock, explained further.

“We are always looking to find ways to increase and broaden our ownership base. Syndication is the way forward for horse racing. One only needs to see the huge success of syndication in Australia to know that syndication is imperative for our market. The high cost of individual horse ownership will undoubtedly drive the need for syndication. The nuances of the South African thoroughbred market make the need for a strong syndication market even more essential. The lack of a resale market and the ratio of prize money to the costs of keep are two particular issues that have made it challenging to attract and retain owners. Naturally, an “out of kilter” cost-to-stakes ratio has made the syndication business in South Africa extraordinarily tough, making it difficult for agents and syndicators to earn a living from syndicating horses. We are looking at addressing this issue by incentivizing syndicators so that there is a potential sustainable career in this arena of the market.”

CAPE RACING CONTINUES TO FOCUS INTENSELY ON FIXING OWNERSHIP CHALLENGES. THIS HAS PRIMARILY TAKEN PLACE THROUGH SIZABLE INCREASES IN STAKES AND INCENTIVES. FOR EXAMPLE, EVEN A CAPE “RESTRICTED MAIDEN” WINNER COLLECTS ENOUGH PRIZE MONEY TO COVER AT LEAST TEN MONTHS OF TRAINING COSTS.

With the introduction of the RaceCape Incentive Scheme powered by Hollywoodbets, two runs and a placing over two months is enough to cover the monthly training cost of a horse.

Aside from prize money, Cape Racing is revamping and enhancing the ownership experience. This aspect of horse racing is as important as prize money, if not more important. These two foundations of ownership – healthy stakes and an outstanding ownership experience – form the cornerstone of syndication. With these two bases covered, Cape Racing can now turn its attention to the syndication market.”

Added Greg Bortz, the Chairman of Cape Racing: “We have stated from the beginning of our journey a year ago that the owner is THE key to the success and sustainability of racing. We wanted to broaden and strengthen our ownership base and, more importantly, make ownership as affordable as possible to people from all socio-economic backgrounds. By dividing the cost of purchasing and keeping a racehorse into “bite sizes,” we increase our chances of attracting desperately needed new blood into our magnificent sport.”

Cape Racing also sees syndication as a unique opportunity to assist the smaller training yards in the Western Cape by spreading the horses purchased across the length and breadth of the Western Cape’s outstanding trainers.

Cape Racing’s support of syndicates will be threefold:

Cape Racing will assist in the marketing and promotion of each licensed syndicator. If the syndicate is a start-up, Cape Racing will assist in its initial setup. This will include logo design, website, and social media page building. Cape Racing will also provide dedicated content assistants to each syndicate. The syndicator will receive high-quality content, from track work to race footage, that he or she can offer and send to his or her owners through the content assistant. Cape Racing will also promote each licensed syndicator through all our web and social media channels.
Cape Racing will be offering financial assistance to syndicators. Each licensed syndicator will receive six months’ interest-free payment terms at a Cape Racing sale. This helps the syndicators extend slightly so there is always stock on the shelf for new owners. Cape Racing will also pay the syndicator a 2% commission on horses purchased for their syndicate from a Cape Racing sale.
Incentives will be paid out to both the ownership of the horse and the syndicate manager based on the success of the syndicate horse. The size of the incentives paid out will depend on the category of trainer of each horse. The incentive payouts will be as below:

CATEGORY A TRAINER (a top 3 position on the Cape trainers log the previous season):

R20 000 win bonus to the ownership (One win bonus per horse a season)
R5 000 win bonus to the syndicate manager (One win bonus per horse a season)
R250 RaceCape fee to the syndicate manager per runner

CATEGORY B TRAINER (log position between 4^th and 6^th on the Cape trainers log the previous season):

R20 000 win bonus to the ownership (Two win bonuses per horse a season)
R5 000 win bonus to the syndicate manager (Two win bonuses per horse a season)
R500 RaceCape fee to the syndicate manager per runner

CATEGORY C TRAINER (log position of 7^th and below on the Cape trainers log the previous season)

R20 000 win bonus to the ownership (Three win bonuses per horse a season)
R5 000 win bonus to the syndicate manager (Three win bonuses per horse a season)
R750 RaceCape fee to the syndicate manager per runner

Explained Justin Vermaak: “We have an imbalance amongst the trainer ranks in the Western Cape. We need to try to boost our smaller yards as much as possible. This creates a healthier horse population and provides further opportunities for horses to run. We also appreciate that syndicating horses with the so-called “smaller” stables is more challenging than selling horses to be trained by the big names. Thus we will base our incentives according to the category of trainer. The trainers’ championship standings determine the category at the end of each season. This removes any opinion or judgment in placing trainers into categories. Prior season log position is the sole determining factor.”

ON TOP OF THESE INCENTIVES, CAPE RACING WILL HOST A “SYNDICATORS CHAMPIONSHIP.”

All qualifying runners will earn points for their respective syndicators.

At the end of the season, the champion syndicator will win R100 000 and be awarded the leading syndicator award at the Cape Racing Awards. There will also be bonuses for the syndicators filling the top five places on the championship log.

Added Vermaak: “The process to get signed up as a licensed syndicator is simple. Contact our team, and we will send the necessary registration paperwork. We will require documentation and conduct our vetting process to ensure the applicant’s good standing. Once approved, the syndicator will receive an official verification badge from the Cape Turf Club. This serves as proof that the syndicator has been officially licensed by us and passed our vetting control, which gives prospective owners and shareholders a show of confidence in the authenticity of the syndicator. Once onboard as a licensed syndicator, we will work hand in hand to ensure the growth and stimulation of your syndicate.”

Once onboard as an official syndicate, the syndicator must apply for each horse to qualify for the incentives.

During this process, Cape Racing will ensure that each horse has been syndicated in the program’s spirit. Cape Racing has set certain qualifying criteria.

For example, each horse must be at least 50% owned by the syndicate. Also, a minimum of six owners are needed for the ownership group to be designated as a syndicate.

The program intends to grow the ownership base with new owners and transform the ownership base in the Cape.

GATHERING A SMALL GROUP OF EXISTING HIGH-PROFILE AND WELL-ESTABLISHED OWNERS TO FORM A SYNDICATE, FOR EXAMPLE, WILL NOT RESULT IN QUALIFICATION FOR THE INCENTIVES. ALL INFORMATION WILL BE CLEARLY ILLUSTRATED TO EACH SYNDICATOR UPON APPLICATION.

Numbers rise at Bass-Robinson stable as reputation grows

Trainer finished sixth in the national trainers log last season and will finish fourth this term

There is an interesting statistic regarding Saturday’s meeting at Kenilworth: Justin Snaith sends 22 runners to the Cape track and Candice Bass-Robinson sends 20. It is evidence that the latter stable is becoming increasingly popular with owners who are happy to have their horses with SA’s leading female trainer.

It’s been an excellent season for Bass-Robinson, daughter of legendary trainer Mike Bass. The 48-year-old finished sixth in the national trainers log last season and will finish fourth this term.

Of course, it is Charles Dickens who has delighted so many people with two grade 1 wins, one grade 2 and one grade 3. The colt has a big shout of being named horse-of-the-year at next month’s Equus awards.

Bass-Robinson’s supporting cast have played important roles in the stable’s successful season — most notably Trip Of Fortune with the four-year-old winning the grade 1 Horse Chestnut as well as the Drill Hall Stakes. The four-year-old has earned plenty of prize money for his owner/breeder, Drakenstein Stud.

Perhaps no trainer is looking forward to the new season more than Bass-Robinson who appears to have a strong string of younger horses set to hold their own at the top level.

One of them is her two-year-old filly, October Morn, who has been priced up 6-10 favourite for Saturday’s Irridescence Stakes at Kenilworth. No surprise at this price considering the Avontuur Farm-bred filly trounced her rivals by six lengths last time out.

The race is named after Mike de Kock’s grade 1 winner, Irridescence, whom this writer was lucky enough to witness notch a game victory in the QE 11 Cup in Hong Kong 17 years ago. She was given a magnificent ride by Weichong Marwing.

The only danger to October Morn is the Snaith inmate Flying V — a R650,000 daughter of Vercingetorix also bred at Avontuur Farm. The filly is chasing a course hat-trick but faces her toughest task to date.

Aldo Domeyer rides six horses for the Bass-Robinson stable at the meeting and kicks off with a son of Trippi, Trippi’s Silk, in the first race on the card. The youngster was weak in the market on debut but turned in a fair effort to finish fourth.

The opposition includes Vaughan Marshall’s grey colt, Golden Grey, and Solomons Seal with Piere Strydom booked to ride Eric Sands’ Potala Palace colt.

Sands also introduces a R650,000 son of Vercingetorix who will sport the familiar yellow and purple colours of the Hollywood Syndicate. Probably a race best watched.

In the second race, the Bass-Robinson-Domeyer partnership team up with Plus Four, a suitable name as this R800,000 son of Vercingetorix is co-owned by Gary Player. The trainer’s comment in Winning Form is “very nice colt, may just need the experience”.

Questioning has the best form while Sea Horse has to enter calculations as the son of Twice Over cost Nic Jonsson R2m when purchased from Klawervlei Stud. Snaith’s comment “smart colt, one to follow over ground”.

Domeyer will partner the favourite, Lunch Money, in the final leg of the Pick Six and — from a favourable draw — the son of Rafeef has a bright chance of notching his second win.

However, the joker in the pack could be stablemate, Max The Otter, who is surely better than his recent form figures suggest. His last race over 1,000m was too short and a quartet floating Gareth Wright’s mount with Lunch Money might pay a decent dividend.

Hollie Doyle Previews Her Weekend Rides

With one eye on the jockeys’ championship, Hollie heads to Newmarket for six Saturday rides before flying to France for a Listed race for Archie Watson on Sunday.

HEAVENLY IN PURSUIT OF MORE BLACK TYPE

I’m working hard to keep reigning champion William Buick in my sights in the race to be champion jockey, but it’s been a frustrating week so far with winners proving hard to come by.

Still, I’m hopeful I can make up some ground with a full book of rides at Newmarket on Saturday, including my boss Archie Watson’s HEAVENLY BREATH in the Listed Ric And Mary Hambro Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes (4.15).

Apple Tree Stud’s daughter of Dark Angel has already achieved valuable black type, finishing second in a Group 3 in France in September and failing by only a nose in Listed company at Saint-Cloud in March.

Stepping up to 1m4f shouldn’t be a problem for a filly who deserves to win a race at this level. She’s straightforward, and this looks a good opportunity on paper on the back of a respectable run in the Group 3 Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes at Newcastle.

AMIGO OUT TO MAKE WINNING DEBUT

Michael Bell introduces the Gredley family’s Postponed filly AMBIENTE AMIGO in the Juddmonte British EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (2.30) at Newmarket.

This 7f restricted contest looks an ideal starting point for a juvenile who should appreciate going further next year. She’s out of a 10f winner and a half-sister to Baremboim, who stays well.

PEDRO BACK ON A WORKABLE MARK

With David O’Meara among the winners of late, I’m also expecting a bold show from BOPEDRO in the Lettergold Handicap (3.40).

A winner on the Rowley Mile in the spring, he showed at York that he’s effective on a quicker surface when staying on well to be second over a shorter trip, and a 4lb ease in the ratings leaves him on a workable mark.

A little earlier, Brian Meehan’s BEACH BUOY makes his turf debut off a reduced rating in the 6f handicap (3.05) on the card. He won the first of his three starts on the All-Weather at Kempton in October and receives weight from all his rivals on this seasonal return.

MAJOR MAJOR clearly needs to show something off his falling mark in the penultimate 10f handicap (4.50). Richard Hannon’s three-year-old has been gelded since finishing well adrift in two starts this year, while stablemate RICH will hopefully appreciate a drop in grade in the concluding 7f handicap (5.25) after struggling in the Sandringham at Royal Ascot.

QUEST FOR LISTED SUCCESS IN FRANCE

Archie Watson’s runners are never far away when he sends them to France, so I’m hoping the journey to La Teste-de-Buch on Sunday will pay off with NOO POINT .

The Listed Criterium Du Bequet-Ventes Osarus (3.50) is a step up in class for this nice colt, who won a 6f maiden at Chepstow for Josh Bryan last month. It’s a first for me, as I’ve never ridden around the Bordeaux venue, which is a right-handed turf track.

NASHWA IN GREAT SHAPE AFTER FALMOUTH WIN

It was great to hear from Imad Alsagar’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe the other day that star filly Nashwa has come out of last week’s race in fantastic shape, and it’s now all systems go for the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

She was back to her brilliant best in the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, and I can’t wait to partner her again in her attempt to win the 10f fillies’ feature for the second time.

Hollywood And Barnane Stud Two-year-old Filly Just Fails At Newbury

The Hollywood Syndicate’s colours were seen in the first race at Newbury in the UK today carried by Bourgeoisie, who was ridden by Sean Levey.

The British-bred Siyouni filly is registered under the ownership Owen Heffer and Barnane Stud (the latter is a stud farm in Ireland owned by the Kieswetters of Ridgemont).

She produced a powerful late run in the six furlong Maiden Fillies Stakes and was unlucky to lose on the head bob.

That was just her second career start.

She is an impressive specimen and is one to follow.

ROUGAROUIN and DEVIL A SAINT are also likely to improve so could have a say. KWITE A KING was backed on debut and would have gained plenty from that experience. There are many well-bred newcomers to consider so betting support for any of them must be taken seriously. LORD QUINN, GREETING MY MASTER, PLUS FOUR, KAAPSE KLOPSE and SEA HORSE all have attractive pedigrees.

Both STEADFAST and SACAMBAYA have the form to get into the picture. KING VISERYS, JACK IN THE GREEN and ETOILEFILLANTE are not incapable of making their presence felt either.

4 1:50 PM – Cape Turf Club Syndicates Cape A Stakes

Good race. Top-rated BEREAVE is the best-weighted runner and sets a good standard. He’ll be hard to beat if at his best in his peak outing but must turn the tables on SPEED MACHINE and in-form SILVER FALCON who is at the top of his game having won a similar contest last time. RESONATE could also have a role to play with improved fitness on his side. WECANGOALLNIGHT is weighted to reverse the form of a recent meeting with RAGNAR LOTHBROK.

5 2:25 PM – Olympic Duel Stakes (Listed) (Fillies And Mares)

Good Listed race. MISS MARGUERITE is at the top of her game and has beaten most of these rivals in reeling off a hat-trick of wins recently, so is likely to go well again. KWINTA’S LIGHT is versatile and is maintaining a good consistent level of form. She ought to be competitive too. QUEEN OF SPARTA and SHE’S MY CAPTAIN are not at their best over this trip but cannot be discounted, all the same. SPYWING is dangerous on these terms and BODY ELECTRIC is not without a chance either.

6 3:00 PM – World Sports Betting Irridescence Stakes (Listed) (2 Year Old Fillies)

Quality renewal. Well-bred stablemates BEACH BOMB and OCTOBER MORN impressed when winning over 1200m last time out and both are likely to make further progress going the extra 200m. Snaith-trained fillies FLYING V and SIDDELEY are likely to be competitive too. The former is open to any amount of improvement over this trip, while the latter has experience of having already raced well over this distance. ROYALS, GREEN VALKYRIE and QUICK TRIP complete the shortlist.

A typically competitive renewal of this 2yo Grade 3. Well-bred colts ZIL MORIS and SNOW PILOT have improved with each outing and could have more to offer after last-start maiden victories. HLUHLUWE has made rapid progress recently and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t continue to improve. He is 3kg better off with MY GOLLY MOLLY, who is also 3kg worse with SPRING PALACE on the form of their meeting over this course and distance. MONUMENTAL will be more at home over this trip and is capable of staking a claim too. Cracking contest!

Lightly raced FUTURE GIRL built on a promising comeback run by beating most of these rivals to win the Listed Stormsvlei Stakes over 1800m and should have more to offer going this trip in her peak outing. BROADWAY GIRL, VERONICA MARS and LOVE IS A ROSE are better off at the weights so ought to pose more of a threat. GOLD POKER GAME was the big disappointment in that contest but did have legitimate excuses and must not be written off just yet.

LUNCH MONEY has given the impression this trip is what he is looking for. Despite their recent inconsistency, both BARDOLINO and AUGUSTA BLUE are proven to be more than capable of staking a claim at this level. TOTHEMOONANDBACK was an eye-catching 2nd over an inadequate trip when returning from a break and, with improved fitness on his side, should have more to offer over this distance. Chase Maujean rode a double for Emmanuel Kaknis on the Fairview poly today and he went on to score two more wins to make it a four-timer.

Maujean goes to 35 wins and has done it at a strike rate of 4.94%.

Kaknis is on 12 wins at 6%.

Gavin Smith and Alan Greeff each had one win apiece.

Smith goes into the last meeting two wins ahead of Greeff in the intriguing battle for the East Cape Championship.

Smith is on 123 wins and Greeff on 121.

On Boxing Day 2015 Lizzie Kelly gained what was then her most notable success to date when Tea For Two won the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase, making her the first female jockey to win a Grade One race over jumps in Britain, the horse being trained by Nick Williams and owned by her mother Jane Williams.

In February 2016 she won Europe’s richest handicap hurdle, the Betfair Hurdle, on Agrapart at Newbury and the following year she became only the second woman to ride in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, again on Tea For Two, but she was unseated from her horse at the second fence.

A few weeks later she won the Grade 1 Betfred Bowl on Tea For Two.

The following year, she won the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, riding Coo Star Sivola, trained by Nick Williams.

She rode in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Tea For Two for the second year in a row, where she finished seventh.

In July 2020, Kelly announced her immediate retirement from race riding following the news she was expecting her first child.

Hayley Turner was the first woman to ride an outright Group 1 winner on the flat in Britain when partnering 7-1 chance Dream Ahead to victory in the July Cup sprint at Newmarket in 2011.

She won the Group 1 Nunthorpe on Margot Did in the same season.
