R4.3 million WSB Derby Day Set To Thrill And Entertain
4Racing
The World Sports Betting Championships ups the ante this Saturday as the WSB Triple Crown and Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara Series concludes with a high-quality R4.33 million WSB Derby Day of thrilling Graded racing.
The stakes are high in every respect, with the race day headlined by the R1.5 million WSB SA Derby (Grade 1) for three-year-olds over 2450m, the prestigious R1 million HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes (Grade 1) over 1600m and the very special R750 000 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer Oaks (Grade 2) for three-year-old fillies over 2450m.
A fun, family day is lined up at Turffontein this weekend, with fantastic racing for punters and plenty to entertain the whole family on-course.
Jumping castles, face painting, teacup carousels, miniature trains and swings will all add to the family carnival atmosphere.
While entrance is absolutely free, there is plenty of hospitality on offer at Turffontein on the day.
World Sports Betting Derby Day, however, will belong to the punters, who will have their pick of fantastic thoroughbreds on offer on this big day at the Big T.
Fresh from catching the Soweto Derby in the stands between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, top jockey S’manga Khumalo is looking forward “to truly entertain a Derby crowd” and he will be riding African Torrent for Mike and Adam Azzie in the WSB SA Derby on horseracing’s own Derby Day.
Rachel Venniker again gets the ride on first leg WSB Gauteng Guineas winner, Eye Of The Prophet, for Paul Matchett, while the likes of Billy Bowlegs, Electric Gold, Good Council and Rule By Force are fancying their chances at WSB SA Derby glory.
Second leg WSB SA Classic winner Anfields Rocket is not in the final field for the WSB SA Derby this weekend, but will instead compete in the HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, along with fantastic runners in Puerto Manzano, Thunderstruck, Bingwa and Red Saxon in a high-quality field.
In the Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer Oaks being held in honour of SA horseracing’s First Lady, Mrs O, Khumalo will again gun for glory on Wilgerbosdrift SA Classic winner Bless My Stars for Sean Tarry, with Richard Fourie riding None Other for Lucky Houdalakis and Piere Strydom continuing his swansong by riding Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner, Lady Of Power, for the Azzies.
“The World Sports Betting Championships season keeps delivering exceptional and exhilarating race days and we expect no less from Derby Day! World Sports Betting have come on board in a big way and we look forward to their sponsorship adding to the energy and excitement on the track as we build up to WSB Champions Day on Saturday 29 April. But until then Derby Day is going to be sizzling and we urge racegoers to come out in their numbers for what is sure to be a fantastic day of horseracing,” said 4Racing CEO, Fundi Sithebe.

“Rabada Would Have Won The July, Abashiri Should Not Have Run” – Azzman
Mike Azzie looked back today on one of the most pressured months of his long career, the June of 2016.
However, he added it was owner Adriaan Van Vuuren’s life-long dream to win the Durban July.

Lady Of Power In A Better Space Ahead Of Oaks
Sheela On Track For The Computaform Sprint
Mike and Adam Azzie had the unusual bonus of inheriting a classic winner shortly after she had earned the title.
A sale apparently fell through and there were other ructions among the connections of the former Joe Soma-trained Lady Of Power shortly after she had won the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.
She was consequently moved to the Azzie yard.
However, Mike said it was soon clear from her work she was not herself in her new surrounds and was “as flat as a pancake.”
The owner obviously wished to still take a chance though as she was still an alive candidate to land the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara, which comes with a R1 million bonus.
Under the circumstances she did well to run a 4,75 length fifth.
Mike said she had come on tremendously since then.
She had been putting in very good work and her blood picture was good so he hoped she would give a better account of herself.
There is quite a lot of speed on her female line, but being by Master Of My Fate out of a Fort Wood mare gives hope she can see out the 2450m trip of the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer Oaks at Turffontein Standside on Saturday.
The Azzies have always had a high regard for Sheela and Mike confirmed that the Grade 1 Computaform Sprint on April 29 was her chief mission.

RAIN IN HOLLAND has had her merit rating raised from 111 to 120 after winning the Grade 2 Colorado King Stakes over 2000m on the standside track at Turffontein on Saturday 25 March. The Handicappers were of the unanimous opinion that runner-up NEBRAAS made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 116.
Apart from the winner there were no other ratings increases, but two horses were given a drop. DIVINE ODYSSEY is down from 111 to 109, while SECOND BASE drops to 104 from 106.
- Kings Cup (Listed)
CAPE EAGLE has seen his rating increased from 95 to 99 after capturing the Kings Cup over 1600m on the turf course at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday. Both runner-up CAPTAIN FONTANE and 3rd placed LORD WILLIAM were used as line horses when assessing this race, leaving them unchanged on marks of 106 and 104, respectively.

- East Cape Guineas (Listed)
PERFECTION has had his rating raised from 91 to 103 after easily winning the Listed East Cape Guineas for three-year-olds over 1600m on the Fairview Polytrack on Friday 24 March. The race was originally scheduled for the turf course, but the meeting was moved to the Polytrack because of weather-related reasons.
The Handicappers took the view that 4th placed HEATHCLIFF made for the most suitable line horse here, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 86. There were no other ratings increases from this event, and no horses were given a drop.
- East Cape Sprint Cup (Listed)
COUNTDOWN remains unchanged on a mark of 109 after he landed the Listed East Cape Sprint Cup over 1200m on the Polytrack at Fairview on Friday. The Handicappers were of the view that COUNTDOWN himself made for the most suitable line horse here, hence his unaltered rating.

Money Heist (Picture: Candiese Lenferna)
The Heist Is On In KZN
Jack Milner (4Racing)
Although only a one-time winner, Money Heist has taken on the best three-year-olds in the land and has travelled around the country to do so.
After winning his maiden at the second time of asking in spectacular style from a wide draw, and then going down narrowly in his next start, the Gareth van Zyl-trained three-year went off to Cape Town where he contested the Grade 2 Cape Cup and Grade 1 Cape Guineas, both over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
Unfortunately, he continuously had no luck with draws. In the Cape Cup he jumped from barrier No 14, ended up too far back, but ran on well to finish fifth, 4.05 lengths behind Cousin Casey.
He landed No 10 draw in the Guineas, was way back turning for home, but produced the third fastest finish to end up sixth, 6.90 lengths behind Charles Dickens.
Money Heist then moved up to Joburg to contest the Grade 2 World Sports Betting Gauteng Guineas where he fared even worse with his draw, landing up in barrier No 15. He never got into the race and finished 10 lengths behind Eye Of The Prophet.
Finally, in the Grade 1 WSB SA Classic over 1800m, he landed up in No 4 draw. However, he wore blinkers for the first time and he never settled, fading out to finish 6.75 lengths behind Anfields Rocket.
On Wednesday he takes a mighty drop in class when he lines up in Race 4, a Novice Plate over 1500m, at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, where he looks almost impossible to oppose. He has an advantage of 11kg based on merit ratings and rates a banker in all bets.
This is the course where he won his maiden and despite the widest draw, No 8 this time, this should prove a real confidence booster for Money Heist.
