We’re Jamming To Prove Himself A Top Sprinter

The Justin Snaith-trained We’re Jamming is officially 1kg under sufferance in the Grade 2 Cape Merchants over 1200m at Kenilworth on Sunday, but the form of his last race points to him being the one to beat carrying just 52kg under Grant van Niekerk.

He beat 7th-placed Captain Bombshell in the Listed Sophomore Sprint by 4,35 lengths when giving the latter 2kg over this same course and distance last time out.

The latter then came out and won a MR 93 Handicap by a length over this same course and distance on Wednesday running off a 95 merit rating.

The handicappers raised Captain Bomshell to a 100.

If he is a proper 100 merit rating, then it follows that We’re Jammin’ should be a 113.

However, taking the 1kg he is under sufferance into account, We’re Jamming is effectively running off a 108 on Sunday, so could be seen to be 2,5kg well in.

The equation does not favour him as much if looking at another horse he beat in the Sophomore called Quandary, although it does still point to him being underrated.

He beat Quandary by 9,85 lengths.

Quandary then came out on Wednesday and over the same 1200m course and distance ran a 0,55 length third to Ensuing in a MR 74 Handicap off an 83 merit rating.

The handicappers have raised Quandary to an 85.

If he is a proper 85 then We’re Jamming should be a 110, which puts him 1kg well in on Sunday.

It is not surprisning the form has worked out such because there were at least two highly touted horses running in the Sophomore i.e. Trompie and Hitthemhardsunshine, who could both in time rise above their official merit ratings of 93 and 107 respectively.

The favourite for the Merchants is the Dean Kannemeyer-trained four-year-old Gimmethegreenlight gelding Gimme A Prince, who has won three out of five and finshed a half-a-length second last time out to Resonate in the Listed South Easter Sprint over 1100m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Hollywoodbets have Gimme A Prince at 5/1, We’re Jamming at 11/2 and Resonate at 25/4.
