Klawervlei’s Special Seven
John Koster of Klawervlei has identified seven of his favourites among the 26-strong Klawervlei draft representing the farm, the farm as agent, and the Klawervlei Grooms Trust, to be sold at Sunday’s 2022 CTS Farm Yearling Sale. Most are unnamed.
Lot 5 : colt by Pomodoro out of Garibondy, by Var
“His dam was very speedy : she won six races over 1000m, and she is by Var who is turning out to be a very special broodmare sire. A quality colt, good size on the leg with scope and looks very athletic.”
Lot 25 : filly by Pomodoro out of Marquesa Naranja by Duke Of Marmalade
“This filly is a half-sister to Alexander Goldrun, who was joint top filly on the international four-year-old classification, and champion four-year-old filly in Ireland. She had 10 wins, including 5 G1s. A great international pedigree.”
Lot 41 : colt by Pomodoro out of Possible Dream, by Captain Al
“Captain Al is already the broodmare sire of 36 stakes winners, at 5.6%. The mare won five races, was G1 placed, and is already the dam of three winners. She is a sister to Contador, who was a G1 winner. From the family of former Horse Of The Year Roland’s Song, winner of 14 races including 5 G1s. A great old Koster family.”
Lot 42 : filly by Pomodoro out of a Fort Wood mare
“She looks a racehorse this one, she has got a great shape. Her dam, Princess Milo, is a half-sister to Slumdogmillionaire, who won the G1 SA Classic and the G1 Horse Chestnut. Her half-brother has been entered for a Graded race on July day.”
Lot 79 : colt by Visionaire out of Big Mona, by Yes It’s True
“This is a high quality colt, with a good shape, and he is a half-brother to five winners, including a pair of Group 3 winners.”
Lot 85 : Dance Mo : filly by Royal Mo out of Care to Dance (CAN) by Smart Strike (CAN)
“This filly is out of an imported mare from an international family. Uncle Mo over the Mr Prospector line has produced 7% stakes winners to runners. This filly is smart, with rein, depth, and scope. She is athletic, I like her a lot.”
Lot 95 : colt by What A Winter from Cordial Report, by Spectrum
“A quality colt, with depth and good hind quarters. He walks well, looks athletic. His dam is a half-sister to dual G1 winners Highland Night and Warm White Night, a top-class Highlands pedigree.”
Black Swan’s Exclusive Offers
Black Swan Stud, acting as agent, has the singular honour of presenting the only Elusive Fort yearling, and the only Quasillo (Sea The Stars) yearling, at the CTS Farm Sale on Sunday.
The first offering from Black Swan is Lot 8, Golden Tatjana, a filly by Erupt out of Goldandsilver (Silvano) from the family of Graded winning sprinter, Golden Shina.
The Quasillo offspring is Lot 16, an unnamed colt, bred from the Silvano mare Julia, herself a half-sister to Real Red, and she is a mare who has already produced three winners.
Lot 83 is a filly by Elusive Fort, the sire of a host of stakes winners, including Kommetdieding, Big Burn and Catch Twenty Two. She is out of Call Of The Hunt by Miesque’s Approval, and she is a half-sister to up-and-coming handicapper, Exceeder.
Maine Chance Brings Nine Quality Yearlings
Maine Chance Farms, leading breeders for many a decade, will present a quality draft at Sunday’s CTS Farm Yearling Sale at Kenilworth Racecourse.
Tim Bootsma of Maine Chance said Lot 2, Facile Flyer is a “very nice filly” by boom stallion Vercingetorix. She is the second foal of Listed-placed Felicity Flyer, by Noordhoek Flyer, and Bootsma is confident she will be a good seller.
They are offering Lot 26 Mela Strength, a colt by deceased multiple champion Silvano. He is the first foal out of the winning mare by Scat Daddy from the family of Alexander Goldrun.
He is also fond of Lot 54, Sugar Sweet by Erupt, out of Sugar Almond by Al Mufti. “She is strong and speedy,” Bootsma said.
Shout At The Moon, is Lot 58, a “very racy” filly by Erupt from Sylvanite, a decent mare who finished second in the Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes.
Their other colt is Lot 77 Alexis Zorba, a son of Erupt, and out of the graded-placed Silvano mare, Arissa.
Bootsma likes Lot 103, a daughter of William Longsword out of the mare Equine, by Silvano, who has already produced a black-type filly from only two previous foals. This one is named Enchanting Lady, and the stud manager described her as “very nice and athletic.”
Lot 4: Winter Fragrance colt by What A Winter out of Fragrant Al (Captain Al)
Nadeson Park’s “Six Of The Best”
Nadeson Park Stud has built a good reputation in recent years, and they will have 16 lots going through the auction ring at Sunday’s CTS Farm Yearling Sale at Kenilworth.
Hassen Adams of Nadeson Park commented: “I had a look at them on the farm last week and I am impressed. This is a super draft, and the proof is in the pudding. Racehorse lovers will love what they see, and I invite everyone to come and have a look.”
Adams added: “It is not easy for me to put them in order of preference because they are all nice, but I have identified six that are really special.”
Adams said his top filly at the sale is Lot 31, Jet Green, by Gimmethegreenlight out of Mysterious Jet by Jet Master – a full sister to La Bella Mia, the eight-time successful G2 Post Merchants winner. “She is magnificent, and has grown into her frame beautifully.”
His next best is Lot 35, Ocean Palace, a filly by Potala Palace from Ocean’s Swell, by Jay Peg. “She is a half-sister to Ocean Time, who ran third to Thunderstruck in the recent G1 Gold Medallion. This does not reflect in the catalogue.”
Lot 4 (PICTURED) is Adams’ top choice among his colts. He is Winter Fragrance, by What A Winter out of Fragrant Al (Captain Al), from a long line of multiple winners. “He is just superb, he looks like his dad, beautifully topped. I think he is going to be something special. I really like him.”
Lot 100 District Twelve is a colt by Twice Over out of District Six by Mujadill. His dam has already produced four winners, including G2 winner and G1 placed Gimme Six. “District Six is one of my foundation mares, and she has another nice one here. He is not quite there yet, but come August he’ll be spot-on, a quick two-year-old.”
Lot 76 Sahnish Girl is a daughter of Time Thief out of Arikara by Fencing Master. She is a first foal, and Adams noted: “Her dam is Arikara, I can’t believe she has thrown such a beautiful horse, she is a brute of a filly and I rate her highly.”
Lot 9 is Grecian Palace, a racy filly by Potala Palace out of Grecian Dancer, by Antonius Pius. The dam’s one previous runner has already won a race. “I like Potala Palace as a stallion, and this filly’s dam is out of the terrific broodmare Isadora Duncan. I sold her half-brother for a lot of money. This is a family I have high hopes for.”
A Good Variety From Ridgemont Highlands
Ridgemont Highlands, who won the 2022 Farm Sale race with We’re Jamming on Wednesday at Kenilworth, has a variety of yearlings on offer, representing six stallions, at Sunday’s CTS Farm Yearling Sale at Kenilworth.
Their draft is made up of two Canford Cliffs colts, a colt and a filly by Duke Of Marmalade (sire of We’re Jamming), and fillies by Captain Of All, Rafeef, Global View and Horizon.
“This is a good group of youngsters; the Rafeef filly is outstanding, and the Duke Of Marmalades are especially nice. They are all worth a look,” said Ridgemont Highlands’ Craig Carey.
Lot 50 Becky Sharp is the Ridgemont Highlands stallion Rafeef’s specimen referred to above. She is bred out of former Listed Ladies Mile winner Sassy Sal, by High Chaparral, whose first foal has already won a race.
Lot 67 is Switcheroo, a good-looking colt by Duke Of Marmalade out of Vice Versa, by emerging top broodmare sire Var. He is a first foal from the family of Cold As Ice and Live Life.
The other Duke Of Marmalade is Lot 11, a filly named Fast Track, out of the National Assembly mare In Like Flynn, a Listed winner who has already thrown three multiple winners.
The farm’s other resident stallion Canford Cliffs’ Lot 18 is Hoodwink, a son of SA Nursery winner King’s Temptress, who has already given an indication of her stud value with a Listed winner from only two runners.
The other colt by Canford Cliffs is Lot 49, Lines Crossed, a first foal produced by the Var mare, Saltire, who was Listed-placed.
Horizon was mated with the Joshua Dancer mare Empress Award – Lot 102 – for an as yet unnamed filly from the family of Set To Music, and Global View’s mating with Listed-placed Make It Raine (New Approach) produced a first filly foal named Dizzy Heights (Lot 23).
Lot 98 Deoch An Doris is a half-sister to Crimson King by Captain Of All, an interesting cross with Cup Of Rubies, who is by Mogok.
