The Grade 1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby winner Pomp And Power (Vercingetorix) is a short 9/10 favourite for the Grade 1 Daily News 2000 and the three time-winning Drakenstein homebred Silvano filly Silver Darling is 7/2 for the Grade 1 Woolavington 2000.
Astute race watchers would have been hoping that the Woolavington prices were based on the bare form rather than what they saw from the luckless Silver Darling in the Grade 2 WSB Fillies Guineas but alas the bookmakers did not miss a trick.
This Drakenstien homebred is superbly bred being by Silvano out of the versatile Jet Master mare Jet Belle, who won the Grade 3 Poinsettia Stakes over 1200m twice, but who also won the Grade 2 Gold Bracelet over the Woolavington 2000 course and distance.
Silver Darling’s WSB Fillies Guineas Run (Blue, white square, blue sleeves and cap Draw 7).
Grant van Niekerk has kept the ride.
Pomp And Power has had the best preparation of any of the Daily News runners and has the best form.
He would not have been ring rusty in his last run in the Grade 2 WSB Guineas, which came just over two months after his comfortable win in the Cape Derby, and he should have come on from that last run. .
He caught the eye in the WSB Guineas because he was a bit keen in the running but then after being overtaken for third place by Cosmic Highway he came back again. He was doing good work late and was beaten just 0,80 lengths.
The connections should not have to worry about his July weight on Saturday because he is the joint highest rated runner on 118 so will need to win easily to go above the crucial 120 merit rating mark.
As things stand the three-year-old males will have to be rated above 120 to get more than the minimum weight of 53kg for a horse of their age and gender.
