Trainer Paul Peter achieved his dream of winning the Computaform Sprint at Turffontein on Saturday when Master Archie (Rafeef) beat stable companion Big Burn (Elusive Fort).
Master Archie’s sire Rafeef’s only Grade 1 win was in this race.
Third place went to True to Life (Duke Of Marmalade) with Alesian Chief (Vercingetorix) in fourth.
Master Archie was away well and was always in the front line under Gavin Lerena and burst clear of the opposition with 300m to run.
Stablemate Big Burn, who had been backed to go off the 3-1 favourite under Warren Kennedy, started to close in late but the bird had flown, and Master Archie was still 2.25 lengths clear at the post. The grey son of Rafeef drifted out from early favourite at 3-1 to start at 13-2.
True To Life (16-1) was always in touch but could not match the winner, ending up another 0.30-lenghths back in third with Alesian Chief (25-1) a further neck ack in fourth.
“This was always a race I wanted to win and I’m happy to have finally done it,” said Peter.
He said he was not sure what the future holds for Master Archie at this stage. “I need to discuss that with the owners, but big Burn will be aimed at the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint at Scottsville on 4 June.”
It was the third feature on the card that went the way of the Peter yard.
Peter struck early by winning both Grade 2 races for juveniles – the 4Racing SA Fillies Nursery with Maharanee (Flower Alley), and the Heineken SA Nursery with Miss Cool (What A Winter).
Ironically, both runners are fillies, the latter taking on the boys.
