Dean Kannemeyer is hitting feature race form at the right time and for the second time this month he and his in-form jockey Keagan de Melo landed a stakes race, the Listed Sledgehammer over 1800, for the recently late owner and breeding doyen Mike Rattray.
It was also yet another black type success for the country’s current leading sire Vercingetorix, who landed a Listed double on the night.
It was a fine training feat considering the winner Mount Anderson is a five-year-old gelding and was having only his second start for 16 months.
Jumpiing from pole position De Melo relaxed him on the rail in midfield.
Mount Anderson was the only one who managed to quicken off the steady pace.
He burst through the centre and it was soon race over.
The pacemaker, the Duncan Howells-trained Origami (What A Winter), stayed on for a 1,90 length second and the Justin Snaith-trained Native Tongue was a further 1.05 lengths back in third.
Earlier, Howells had won the Listed Scarlet Lady with Vercingetorix four-year-old filly Lyrical, who was ridden by Muzi Yeni.
The race was run at a crawl so it was not surprising the pacemaker Lyrical Dance was able to fend off Jacqueline (Jackson), who had sat in second in the running, to win by half-a-length.
The Silvano filly Princess Anastasia was a further length back in third.
In the WSB Highland Night Cup over 2400m the Corne Spies-trained Imperial Ruby (Silvano) was allowed to dictate a crawl, which was surprising considering he had won from the front recently when the rest of the jockeys were caught napping.
They were caught napping again as Imperial Ruby stayed on in front to win by 0,70 lengths under Craig Zackey.
