CHAMPION mare Winx had to work hard for her 19th consecutive win after being forced to chase down the runaway leader Red Excitement in a thrilling finish in the Gr2 Chemsford Stakes over 1600m Stakes at Randwick, Sydney. on Saturday.
Winx looked back to her best in this $250,000 contest staged in front of a huge adoring crowd. But she had to do some serious work down the home straight.
Jockey Hugh Bowman settled fifth after Winx had jumped from barrier three of 12 and he let her stride along. But the champion was still six lengths adrift of Red Excitment at the 200m. In the style of a true superstar, she found a way to reel in the leader and register a thrilling win.
“It’s a barnstorming win, she’s all them,” crooned he race caller.
The victory was her 23rd career success and continues an unbeaten streak that has remarkably stretched more than two years.
Winx’s next start is likely to be in the Group One George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 16. – The Herald.
