WINX blazed to her 17th straight win in the Gr 1 A$4-million Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. The star mare came home five lengths clear.
Greats of the turf including Octagonal and Lonhro, had met with defeat in the Queen Elizabeth, and Winx’s owner Debbie Kepitis remembered that.
“I came here today thinking about it,” said Kepitis, who is Bob Ingham’s daughter. “It was a hoodoo that got two horses dad owned which came to this race as their final race. Both times I was crushed. But Winx came out and won and it was awesome.”
Winx’s trainer, Chris Waller, said: “She is doing great things for the sport and people will remember her for the rest of their lives. She’s had another perfect preparation, she makes everything look perfect though,’’ he said.
“She makes me look like a genius, Hughie (Bowman) does a great job. It was Hugh Bowman at his very best. He’s definitely part of Winx, what he has done with this mare is very special.
“But the story should be all about Winx. Everywhere she goes now people follow her and it’s very heartwarming. It is a privilege to train such a champion.’’
