Justin Snaith’s Warrior lived up to his name and found a flying finish to reel in game front runner Firealley, who looked a surefire winner 100m out, and take the G3 Variety Club Mile at Kenilworth.
That completed a stakes double on the day for Snaith, and a smart hat-trick for the horse, who is improving at a rapid rate of knots.
Firealley went straight to the front, followed by Adios Amigos and Northern Song, while Warrior was only three lengths adrift as they turned for home.
Hoedspruit was further back, while the classy filly Marina was content to sit last.
Firealley was still at least 2 lengths clear well into the final 200m, but Warrior changed legs, put his big stride together, and got up to win going away by a neck in a barnstorming finish.
“This will be a serious horse,” was the easily understood verdict from Fourie.
Marina finished perhaps best of all to only be beaten three quarters, and certainly lost nothing in defeat.
Hoedspruit had the best exposed form in the race, but worryingly trailed in last.
