As expected War Of Athena cruised to victory in the G2 Wilgerbosdrift Oaks at Turffontein, joining Igugu, Cherry On The Top, and Summer Pudding last year as winners of the Triple Tiara in the process.

Paul Peter put in two pacemakers in Lotus and Sacred Lotus, and they set a decent tempo. But after sitting about 15 lengths off in a strung out field as they turned for home, War Of Athena sliced through the field with the greatest of ease, and 400m out the only threat was Mike de Kock’s improving Sparkling Water.

That one plugged on gamely, but Muzi Yeni was posing on Paul Matchett’s 3-8 favourite, and he cantered to a two length win in a time of 156.38 seconds. A margin that could have been at least doubled if he had felt the need.

“She just gets better and better and is one of the best I have ever sat on,” said pilot Yeni.

That completed a swift big race double for Yeni, as just over half an hour before he had partnered Got The Greenlight to the G1 Horse Chestnut.

That one had also scythed through the opposition and looked to be heading for a facile victory, before the classy three-year-old Copper Mountain came out of the pack to get within half a length, underlining the quality of this crop of sophomores.
