MAYFAIR Speculators went to R1,2-million to secure a filly by VAR at Thursday’s first session of the CTS Emperors Palace Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale at Randjesfontein. She was the top-priced lot at the first session of the auction.

Ice Queen (Lot 25), is by VAR from Baltic Beauty (Windrush), the dam herself a full-sister to Mother Russia. She was consigned by Balmoral Stud.

Chris van Niekerk’s Rainbow Beach Trading secured the second-highest priced lot (106), an unnamed colt by Dynasty from Her Master’s Dream (Far End Stud), knocked down for R900,000.

Colin Bird kept raising his hand for Lot 35, a smart unnamed colt by Lope De Vega (Far End), eventually getting the bid on R800,000.

The first session’s 93 Lots sold yielded R16,85 million, more or less on a par with the first half of last year’s one-day sale, and CTS MD Adrian Todd commented: “We are pleased to have seen a nice cross-section of buyers here, and we look forward to the second session. Most pleasing is that the gallops, stabling and sale itself have commenced very well at Randjesfontein, a new venue for us.”

The second session starts at 6pm, Friday evening.
