RACE 1: Preview: RETALLICK (3) has finished second in all three starts and doesn’t face an inspiring field. VOLTRON (8) finished 1,10 lengths behind the horse which beat Retallick by a short-head last time. SAFFRON RAIN (6) is by Soft Falling Rain and is a half-sister to Pomander, who finished second in the SA Oaks, and to Spice Market, a twice-winner from 1400m to 1600m. (David Thiselton 3-8-6)
RACE 2: Preview: RIVERSTOWN (2) is second best in at the weights and is distance suited. ZILLZAAL (1) is the best weighted but this is too sharp although his class could still carry him close. CORDILLERA (3) has her third run after a rest over a suitable trip.
(David Thiselton 2-1-3)
RACE 3: Preview: GRAPPLER (2) is the one to beat on form and could still improve. EYES ON TIGER (1) should be right there in this line up. LEGERDEMAIN (7) is by Willow Magic and is a half-brother to twice winner Throng. (David Thiselton 2-1-7)
RACE 4: Preview: SABRINA FAIRCHILD (1) has shown some ability and faces an uninspiring field. MIDNIGHT GEM (6) is by Crusade out of Grade 3 Three Troikas Stakes winner Patchouli Moon and she would not have to be special to win this race. SHIKURU (7) is by Pomodoro out of a six-time winning Listed-runner up Kahal mare from 1450m to 1900m and she would not have to be a star to win this race. SANUK (2) could earn in this field. EXULTANT (4) could earn if producing her best. (David Thiselton 1-6-7)
RACE 5: Preview: HOTCHIWITCHI (7) made a good debut and the form has been franked. GREENHILL (2) ran a fair race last time and can earn again in this uninspiring field. PICK A LILY (9) could improve on her moderate debut. (David Thiselton 7-2-9)
RACE 6: Preview: EARL (1) stayed on well last time over 2000m from a similarly tricky draw and Hewitson would have learnt a bit about him. WHITE FANG (2) has been disappointing after a promising second start but he can do better and Marwing now rides. SITTING BULL (5) ran an improved race last time and can earn again with a repeat.
(David Thiselton 1-2-5)
RACE 7: Preview: CASTLE DURROW (1) is comfortably the best weighted horse and is distance suited. BEPOP (6) returns to the trip of her only win and is second best in at the weights. SWISS BANK (3) should be involved in the fight for places too.
(David Thiselton 1-6-3)
RACE 8: Preview: FULL VELOCITY (6) was still green and immature when winning on debut so the layoff should have been of benefit and she is off a reasonable merit rating of 78. FROMHERETOETERNITY (2) has pace and some class and will enjoy the step down to 1000m. LAGERTHA (13) has S’Manga Khumalo up and she can be involved off a competitive mark. SAMOA (9) has improved and should be in the shake up. MADAME PATRICE (4) dead-heated with Samoa when they last met and is half-a-kilogram worse off. (David Thiselton 6-2-13-9-4)
