Universal (Gimmethegreenlight-Cupid) made a huge impression when he won what looked a fairly strong maiden plate over 1200m at Kenilworth today by a massive 9,5 lengths.

The half-brother to 2020 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Vardy (by Var) was third on debut, but went off at a very backable 25-7.

He looked more like a 1-4 shot when displaying an awesome turn of foot to surge clear and win with complete disdain for his hapless ‘rivals’.

The race was bookended by two other events over the same trip, and tellingly his  time of 77.62 was a full two seconds faster than that of Forries Forever, who had won the previous maiden fillies race in good style. And almost a second quicker than Ticket To Ride, who took the following MR80.

Part owner Greg Blank was on course to lead him in, and along with Darryl Yutar is  also involved in Vardy, who is hitting the comeback trail himself.

And the way Universal won today, a meeting with his half-sibling in the future on a far bigger stage is certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.

While it’s early days, Adam Marcus could well have another top horse on his hands.  –tt
