HERE’s Montego Rum (a half-brother to Henry Eatwell’s famous racehorse Home Guard), the South African Champion Three-Phase Eventer in 1969/70. He was owned by Charlotte Hall.

Montego Rum, nick-named ‘Peanuts’,  is seen jumping on this photo with a “net” over his mouth – used for horses who pulled hard. Also notable is his rider, none other than John Nicholson, who trained the popular, white-socked Beau Art (Beau Charles), winner of the 1980 Rothmans Durban July under Freddie Macaskill.

Nicholson, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday soon, lives in retirement in Hillcrest, KZN, still chirpy as ever. “I’m reading and watching a lot of television,” he said. We’ll pin him down for a proper chat soon.
