THE second, third, fourth and fifth horses past the post in the 2017 Sun Met have all been entered for the 2018 renewal.

Legal Eagle, beaten only by Whisky Baron when starting favourite for last season’s race, heads the 31 entries for the R5-million Sun Met over 2000m at Kenilworth on Saturday 27 January. Captain America, Gold Standard (headline photo) and Vodacom Durban July hero Marinaresco – third, fourth and fifth last time – are also among the entries.

The big difference this season, though, is that there are no penalties as the race is run on pure weight-for-age terms. The actual official weights to be carried will not be released until 8 January.

Sean Tarry, trainer of Legal Eagle and successful with Alastor in 2005, has also entered last season’s Cape Fillies Guineas runner-up Safe Harbour and Stonehenge. However he, and owners Chris van Niekerk and Markus Jooste, have so far resisted the temptation to chase the R1 million bonus that Sansui Summer Cup winner Liege would earn if he were to win the historic Cape Town race. There will be a R18,800 supplementary entry stage on 12 December and a R37,602 one on 8 January.

Brett Crawford will be bidding for his fourth Met following Angus in 2003, Futura in 2015 and Whisky Baron and his hand this time includes Cape Derby and Daily News winner Edict Of Nantes, Champions Cup winner Sail South and Captain America, who won the Rising Sun Gold Challenge in June.

Mike de Kock has also won the race three times and he has entered four: Empress Club winner Nother Russia, Heavenly Blue, Orchid Island and Silver Thursday, who runs in Saturday’s World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas.

The maximum number of runners is 20 but the number entered so far is four more than at this stage a year ago.
