Summer Pudding proved herself the true superstar of our racing with an absolute brilliant win in the WSB Summer Cup at Turffontein – scoring her ninth successive triumph in the process.
And embarrassing the boys further, fellow female Running Brave filled the runner up spot.
The Paul Peter team obviously had a game plan as Riverstown went off to set a brisk tempo, followed by Crown Towers, Running Brave, last year’s winner Zillzaal and Tristful .
Summer Pudding was able to get over from her wide draw as the field quickly spread out, and settled about seven lengths off the pace.
Crown Towers moved up to challenge for the lead soon after they turned for home, and was quickly joined by Running Brave. But coming to the final 400, the undefeated Equus horse-of-the-year was looming up threateningly.
And she breezed on by the ultra game Running Brave about 300 from home, and went away to score a dominant win by two-and-a-half lengths in jaw dropping fashion.
It was a further 4,75 lengths to third placed Tree Tumbo, while yet another filly Dance Class filled fourth spot.
But frankly the rest of the field fade into irrelevance in the wake of a true champion.
“She had a task today and i had my doubts with 59kg, but she drilled them. One of the best I will ever ride,” said a jubilant Warren Kennedy.
Market rivals Pack Leader (who went off tote favourite) and Charles never got in a blow,
and trailed in 11th and 18th respectively.
