MANY of the country’s leading trainers have given up racing at Greyville from wide draws, which makes Got The Greenlight’s facile win in Saturday’s Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m even more remarkable than it was on the naked eye.
Joe Soma’s hard-galloping two-year-old colt was mighty impressive winning this power-packed race from a 16 draw under Anton Marcus, and the manner of his victory suggests that this improving youngster has a sparkling three-year-old career ahead of him.
From their draw, Got The Green Light was third-last approaching the 1000m-mark: “I had no plan, just had to jump and wing it” said Marcus in response to race caller Sheldon Peters spotting the colt as having “ten lengths to find” at this juncture.
Got The Green Light improved steadily, raced perhaps seven lengths off Fool’s Gold’s clip into the home bend but, as good horses do, he was very soon all over them. Marcus had the colt still tight on the bit with 350m to run and when he said ‘go’ it was all over as a contest.
Got The Green Light bounced away to win by an easy three lengths from Liberty Dancer and Rock The Globe, clocking 97,96s, more than 1s faster than the time recorded by Gabor in the Gr1 fillies’ feature.
Soma, who knows how to handle a good horse, commented: “His work has been exceptional and I told my partners earlier this week he’d be hard to beat.”
He quipped: “Before the race I stopped and looked whether Got The Greenlight perhaps had his back legs tied and as a result would not be able to win. None of the scribes gave him a winning chance!”
Soma bought Got The Greenlight for a paltry R110,000 at the 2018 CTS April Sale, and breeder Hassen Adams of Nadeson Park kept a share along with Soma’s patron Daylon Chinsammy. They’ve seen a return of R772,000 so far.
Soma quoted Paul Lafferty as saying: “We go to the sales with a bush racing budget, but here we are standing in the Group 1 box!”
Marcus described Got The Greenlight’s exhilarating finish, saying: “It was explosive, he felt like a sprinter. I am really excited and pleased to have ridden a Gr1 winner for my good friends Joe and Gabi Soma.”
Marcus appeared to hold back further accolades for this hugely exciting son of Gimmethegreenlight and Command Chi. But we’ve gotten the message loud and clear, thanks!
