THE outcome of the CTS 1600 (Non-Black Type) on Saturday at Kenilworth could well depend on whether Got The Greenlight is back to his best. Soma is not in Cape Town for the scenery.
He was a brilliant two-year-old and wrapped up the Equus Award as the Champion Two-Year-Old colt when winning the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes over 1600m at Greyville in Durban.
Soma nominated him to run in some of the early races in the Johannesburg Summer season but he missed them all as he suffered a minor setback.
He finally came out of hibernation on 4 January but it was clear by the way he drifted in the betting that Got The Greenlight was in need of the run. He finished
fourth, beaten 6.25 lengths.
Although this is a R5-million race, Soma is unlikely to bring this colt all the way to Cape Town if he did not believe he could win. He has engaged Gavin Lerena to take the ride.
Soma confirmed in a chat with Turf Talk this morning: “We’ve aimed Got The Greenlight at the CTS 1600 since the day we knew he could run. We’re probably not going to get to race for R5million again soon so yes, for that aspect alone we had to be here to compete.
“Got The Greenlight’s prep was interrupted last year because there was overseas interest and I eased off him for several weeks waiting for a deal that didn’t happen. Also, with the travel restrictions from Johannesburg he had to be in quarantine for three weeks. He was only let out between 10am and 3pm, which made things tricky for us.
“He is looking good and he’s well. He has come on considerably from his last outing and we’re expecting a big run. If he produces his best, he will be the horse to beat, though it’s never easy to travel and take on these good horses in their back yard. I respect the opposition”
