THE Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale, set to take place at the Sibaya Casino in Durban next Thursday and Friday, has a tremendous history of uncovering outstanding racehorses at bargain prices.

The list of major races won by former graduates of the KZN Yearling Sale in recent times is an impressive and includes the following:

G1 Gold Cup
G1 Garden Province Stakes
G1 SA Derby –twice
G1 SA Classic
G1 Thekwini Stakes
G1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship
G2 Gold Bowl
G2 Gauteng Guineas
G2 SA Fillies Nursery
G2 Gold Vase

One of the most prolific big race winners sold off a KZN Yearling Sale was the Ian Heyns-bred Seal. A son of Maine Chance Farms’ resident champion sire Silvano, Seal was the sixth top lot sold at the 2009 Sibaya Yearling Sale, where he was knocked down for R210 000.

His dam, the Rambo Dancer mare Prestine Performer, was unraced but is from the same family as former Horse Of The Year Quarrytown and ill-fated Cape Guineas winner Face North.

Sent to trainer Gavin Van Zyl, the bay Seal would make his purchase price look like a great bargain, going on to win 10 races and over R2.2 million in stakes, with his victories including no fewer than six graded or listed races.

Seal also provided his trainer with a first Grade One success when victorious in the 2011 G1 SA Derby, where his beaten rivals included G1 SA Classic hero English Garden and G1 Cape Derby winner Top Seller.

The gelding, who raced for Afrilek Drives (Pty) Ltd, went on to land the G2 Gold Vase, G3 Jubilee Handicap and G3 Caradoc Gold Cup, and was also second in the G2 Gold Bowl and fourth in the G1 Gold Cup.

A truly tough and genuine campaigner, Seal (who won from 1200-3200m) raced from three to six and competed against the very best of his generation. He is yet another fantastic advertisement for the quality of thoroughbred on offer at the KZN Yearling Sale!

Seal’s sire Silvano, whose top offspring include no fewer than 16 individual G1 winners (including former KZN Sale graduate Happy Valentine), has four high quality yearlings on offer at this year’s sale –and they include:

Lot 104 – a half brother to 2 winners, including the useful Jubilee Line out of a stakes placed daughter of champion sire Jallad (the same cross as Met winner Martial Eagle)

Lot 162 –a colt (bred on the same cross as G1 winners Happy Valentine and Vercingetorix) out of a winning daughter of National Assembly and champion Monyela.

Lot 244 –a half sister to a winning 2yo, this filly is out of a three time winning daughter of champion Tatler.

Lot 302 –a half sister to 2 winners (one of whom is dam of useful 2yo Dancer), this filly (bred on the same cross as July hope Black Arthur) is out of a Western Winter half sister to champions Kelly and Victory Moon and from the same family as recent G1 winner Real Princess.
