Last season’s Western Cape horse-of-the-year Golden Ducat makes his seasonal reappearance at Kenilworth on Wednesday in a Progress Plate over 1600m (Race 2).

Eric Sands’ 2xGr1 winning charge is unsurprisingly slung in at the weights, and if anywhere near fit should have the measure of his paltry four rivals, after the scratching of stable mate Cyber Law, who ran on Saturday.

Sands may have already celebrated a winner by then, as he fields highly promising undefeated three-year-old Ottoman Empire in the opener.

The Gimmethegreenlight gelding has quickened like something a bit special in both starts, and if he puts away this 1600m MR94 field in similar style must be a major player in the coming Cape Guineas.

He does face a stiff examination of his credentials though. Pinkerton has won his last three in fluent style, and will have more to come.

But I suspect the Ottoman Empire will win another battle with a handy 54,5kg. -tt
