It has been a rather quiet week on the racing front in Cape Town with no midweek meeting.

Racing enthusiasts will be looking forward to the weekend’s action, which coincides with the running of the last Cape feature races for the 2020/21 season.

With the amount of rain we’ve experienced lately, many of the contenders would have had interrupted preps. Coupled with the fact that the underfoot conditions will be soft punters will need to take additional factors into consideration when making a selection.

Race 6, the Gallops and Goals Final Fling Stakes (Grade 3) over 1800m has attracted a small yet competitive field of 9 runners. Even though SLEEPING SINGLE is best-weighted, I’m siding with her stable companion RAIN IN NEWMARKET as the horse to beat –
she finished 2nd in her last 3 runs, all of which were in feature race company.

She got going late in her last start (over shorter), when filling the runner up berth behind PRETTY BETTY (a game frontrunner). On the strength of that run and now being 4kg’s better off at the weights going over further there is every reason to believe she should have her measure and bounce back to winning ways.

Race 7, the Cape Racing Champagne Stakes (Grade 3) over 1200m is the other feature on the card. Here the Olympic Duel Stakes winner CAPITANA certainly looks hard to oppose.

She renews rivalry with half the field that she beat last time out over the course and distance. She also meets runner-up IRIS on better weight terms and should again have their measure to record back-to-back feature race wins.
