MAURITZFONTEIN will offer nine (and another three as agent) yearlings at next week’s Cape Yearling Sale.
Their draft will include lots by resident sires Ideal World and Byword, the promising Drakenstein sires Duke Of Marmalade and Philanthropist, former leading first crop sire Lateral and current leading first crop sire What A Winter.
The prominent Kimberley farm is one of South Africa’s oldest and most successful stud farms. First established in 1945, the farm has a long history of breeding top class racehorses, with the champions produced there including King Willow, Bodrum, Greys Inn (sire of current Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle), Cherry On The Top (one of just two fillies ever to sweep the Triple Tiara) and the legendary Horse Chestnut.
Recent stars produced by Mauritzfontein include former Equus Champions Marinaresco and Smart Call (who is out of a Horse Chestnut mare!), while the farm is currently home to sires Byword and Ideal World.
Mauritzfontein will also offer (as agent) the only yearling on sale by their late, champion sire Fort Wood. The latter is sire of lot 34 –a brother to 2 winners out of a winning daughter of former top class G1 2yo Night Cap.
The farm’s yearlings hail from some of the best families in the stud book, with the yearlings on offer being related to the likes of legendary racemare and producer Miesque, former Mauritzfontein champion Dog Wood, G1 winner Soft Landing, recent G1 Oaks winner Pine Princess, Horse Of The Year London News, the legendary sires Danehill and Northern Dancer, European classic winners Doyoun and Dumka, Argentinian champion Kaltrue, champion sprinter and top class sire Cadeaux Genereux, and former 2yo champion Grease.
The 2017 Cape Yearling Sale is set to take place at the Mistico Equestrian Centre next Thursday, commencing at 13:00 pm.
