The Model Man Mile (Listed) on the turf at Hollywoodbets Greyville today could be a significant pointer for the sophomore ranks as the current season progresses.
The race is restricted to three-year-olds at WFA and if one sticks to the MR then the filly Aisling comes out on top followed by AJ’s Captain with the balance at a hefty disadvantage.
That’s on the face of it, but it goes a lot deeper than that. Peter Muscutt’s charge Quasiforsure comes into this race unbeaten in two. Donovan Dillon obviously had confidence in his mount on debut when coming from a long way back to ease to a comfortable win with Dillon, who is most comfortable at 60kgs, stripping to 56kg.
He was not able to make the 53kg on handicap debut and Tristan Godden did the honours. He had little to do except sit still as Quasiforsure raced handy before pulling away to win as he liked.
The colt is obviously talented and that will be put to the test tomorrow.
Biggest threat could come from the Dennis Drier-trained Proud Master. After a gentle introduction to racing over a sprint, there were no mistakes next time out. Leading for most of the way, he quickly put the race to bed. He steps up to a mile here but his pedigree suggest that this would be more his trip and he can give Quasiforsure a tough race. At current ante-post odds around 14-1 he looks great value.
Wayne Badenhorst and his sister Barbara Kennedy send ot AJ’s Captain who is already proven in feature company, having finished second in the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe on VDJ day. The stable reports that he is in good heart but he does return from a break which is a concern. In his favour is that he has yet to finish out of the money.
Humdinger takes on males but has won her last two well enough. A win here will push her close to the top of the pile.
On what looks to be a difficult card, the Pinnacle Stakes race five on the programme, will have all guessing.
Ultra Magnus and Pearl Of Asia are all well treated at these weights. However, Ultra Magnus returns from lay-off and may need the run while Pearl Of Asia has a wide draw to contend with which cost him last run when going down narrowly to Solid Gold.
Tempting Fate, who was also narrowly beaten in that contest when starting favourite is showing his best form and can make amends for that defeat. A further piece to the puzzle is Party Time. Mike Miller is never one to shy away from a challenge and Party Time has the makings of a smart colt. He has a handy weight in his favour but takes on a useful field so just how he fares will be watched with more than just passing interest. The Duncan Howells pair of Spydas Corner and Mount Pleasant both return from lay-offs and will probably be short of peak fitness but should be watched with notebook in hand.
MJ Odendaal has not lost faith in Shavout in spite of his charge being rather expensive to follow claiming that the gelding still has some maturing to do. However, he may be worth one more chance when racing in first time blinkers from a good draw over this shorter trip in the Gold Circle Horses to Follow Podcast MR 90 handicap, fourth race on the card.
But he will have plenty of opposition. Ralph The Rascal has excellent form over course and distance and with an in form 2.5kg claimer up, Alyson Wright’s charge must have a strong chance. Shane Humby has more patience than Job, or at last his owners do, but Mr Fitz showed up well when coming back from a lengthy break. He is useful on his day and will challenge while Hail Columbia is not the easiest. He has been disappointing for Dennis Drier but does have talent. He could do better over this longer trip and Mauritzfontein-retained jockey Gavin Lerena is in town to ride which could prove significant.
