PLEASEDTOMEETYOU, the three-year-old some predicted would never run another place after he’d won the Listed Sophomore Sprint at Durbanville in September, cruised in to win another feature at Kenilworth Saturday.
There were bitter cries from the anti-whip brigade following a vigorous, but perfectly legal ride from jockey Bernard Fayd’Herbe on Pleasedtomeetytou in the Sophomore. Some went as far to say that he’d never race again because of a few strong backhanders delivered to his hindquarters in a close finish.
But Pleasedtomeetyou, appearing as happy as a little pig in a pool of mud, had “winner” written all over him fully 500m out in the Need For Speed Handicap over 1000m at Kenilworth on Saturday, admittedly under a hands-and-heels ride from Greg Cheyne, but also showing no emotional scars from his so-called September ordeal.
Pleasedtomeetyou (28-10 favourite) took command 350m from the line and raced on strongly to win from outsiders Russet Air and Seventh Sea, with Gr1 winner Van Halen also trailing in his wake.
“Bernard recommended gelding for Pleasedtomeetyou after they finished fourth to Sand and Sea over 1200m last time. He wasn’t that coltish at all, but it was the right time to geld him,” said trainer André Nel.
He added: “Pleasedtomeetyou enjoys 1000m most, he’s won both his runs over this distance with ease and he looks like an out-and-out sprinter to me, which is not a bad thing. There are good races for sprinters, and the feature sprints are normally dominated by the older horses. We’ll keep him down the straight for now.”
Another winning home-bred for Sabine Plattner’s La Plaisance Stud, Pleasedtomeetyou is by Querari from Plaisir De Fete, a daughter of champion broodmare sire Fort Wood. He’s three from five and has earned R266,000 in stakes.
