CORNE Orffer was unexpectedly booked on four rides at Durbanville on Saturday morning, and two of them won!
Orffer, who is Mauritius-bound and was scheduled to fly to the island on a chartered flight on Saturday, said that trainer Ricky Maingard had phoned him at 6am on Saturday to inform him that there had been complications with the flight and that it had been re-chartered for Tuesday.
He said: “At the same time Keagan De Melo had cancelled his rides at Durbanville, also due to travel problems, and my agent Rob Champion managed to secure Brett Crawford’s available rides, so all fell into place with a welcome double before my Mauritius stint.”
Orffer rode good races, winning on Drakenstein Stud’s filly Opera Swing (Oratorio) in Race 2, and following up on Khaya stables’ Noir’s Boy (Capetown Noir) in Race 9.
He said: “It’s sad to be leaving the Crawford stable ahead of the Summer Season, but Brett understands and has given his blessing. We’ve had a tough time making ends meet during the early lockdown, I have a young family and this is a big opportunity to ride in Mauritius for Ricky Maingard.”
Orffer, like Bernard Fayd’Herbe, will have to spend 14 days in quarantine on the island before he will be allowed to ride, but thereafter will enjoy the plum mounts from Maingard’s yard in the peak season. “This will be my fifth stint n Mauritius, and I had a Top 3 position one season.”
Orffer’s wife Lindsey and kids Luca and Indie-Rose will be joining him in Mauritius in due course.
We look forward to supporting him and FaydHerbe and will be holding thumbs for many winners between them.
