CELESTIAL City, a full brother to Hawwaam, went for R7 million the opening day of the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales at the Germiston Sales complex on Friday.

The son of Silvano out of the great mare Halfway To Heaven, also a half-brother to both Rainbow Bridge and Golden Ducat, was a member of the draft sent to the sales by Wilgerbosdrift (Pty) Ltd.

The colt was bought by Henning Pretorius’ Summerhill Equestian.

Silvano is still proving to be the sire owners want as four of his progeny were the only yearlings to go for over R1 million in early bidding. Next best was Lot 106, also from Wilgerbosdrift, who was knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R4.5 million.

Minutes later, Lot 109 from Drakenstein, was bought by John Freeman Bloodstock for R1.3 million.

Shortly after the purchase of Celestial City, Redmayne, from Avontuur Thoroughbred Farm, was purchased by Form Bloodstock for R1.8 million. Redmayne, Lot 186, is also by Silvano and is out of Fort Wood mare Hannah Gorgeous.

The next best price was R900,000 paid for Flying Esteban, Lot 159, a colt by Dynasty out of Franny, from Mauritzfontein.

At the end of the day, 13 Silvano Lots were offered, eight were sold, for a total of R15, 635,000, an average of R1,954,375. Next best was Gimmethegreenlight who had 23 Lots on the sale of which 14 were sold for a total of R3, 860, 000, an average of R275,714. Of the 230 Lots on offer on Day 1, 121 were sold, 72 were withdrawn and 37 were not sold. The aggregate was R37,250,000, the average R307,851 with the median R150,000.

It is probably a little unfair at this stage to compare with last year’s figures until the final day is over but the average price was only down 3.5% on last year. However, of the R37,250,000, R14.6 million was made up by the sale of just four horses.

Wilgerbosdrift was by far the  most successful vendor on the day with eight lots selling for a total of R13,225,000, an average of R1,653,125, followed by Mauritzfontein (R3,460,000; R266,155) and Avontuur (R3230,000; R538,333).

The sale continues at 11.30 on Saturday.  – TAB News.
