TRAINER Johan Janse Van Vuuren has had to withdraw his top filly Negroamaro from today’s meeting at the Vaal, but he still holds a dominant hand with four of six runners in Race 5 over 1400, and a few of the stable’s other runners have chances on the day.
Janse Van Vuuren commented this morning: “Negroamara is coughing, at this time of year when all the ‘babies’ come into the yard there are coughs around, so we can’t race her today.”
He said about the remaining runners in the race, Silver Class, Seattle Lady, Girl On The Run and Madithiota: “Of the four, I have to prefer Silver Class because she is distance suited.”
Gavin Lerena, who rides Silver Class, is engaged on another Janse Van Vuuren runner, Patty Cake (headline photo), in Race 7 over 1200m. He has won on both. The trainer said: “There isn’t much between Patty Cake and Embrasiatic, so I don’t have a preference here, both have chances.”
Janse Van Vuuren said that he didn’t know what to expect of his recent acquisition Midnight Racer (Race 3), though the field looks weak and this one may improve over ground.
He seemed confident, however, that Lyle Hewitson’s mount British Royale would play a role in the outcome of Race 6 over 1200m. “He’s a nice horse, this one.”
