“MAGIC” Joao Moreira posted a double at Sha Tin on Sunday to set a record for the number of winners in a Hong Kong season.  The Brazilian equalled his record tally of 168 established last season when winning aboard Fantastic Show in the Griffins race and set a new record with victory aboard the Peter Ho-trained Sunny Win.

Afterwards, however, Moreira suggested it is doubtful he can repeat the feat next year. He has been champion jockey in Hong Kong the past three seasons but told the South China Morning Post he is not expecting to be as successful next season.

“I don’t think I will ride more winners next season, you can’t just keep having special seasons back-to-back-to-back and forever,” Moreira said.

“Also, I don’t think the trainers’ support is quite what it was when I first got here, and the trainers love new faces. Tommy (Berry) is going to be one of them and of course that will affect me.”

Moreira told the Hong Kong Jockey Club he was delighted the hard work through the year had paid off.

“It has been a very special season, it means a lot. It means that the hard work that I have put in this season has all been worth it,” Moreira said.

John Size, who set a training record with his 92nd winner two weeks ago, added to his total with Giddy Giddy winning on the dirt in the Class 4 Pok Fu Lam Public Riding School Handicap over 1200m

There are two meetings left in the 2016-17 Hong Kong season, Happy Valley on Wednesday before Sha Tin on Sunday.
