IT may not have looked as easy on the naked eye this time, but Winx, the wonder mare, trounced her field in a race record time at Royal Randwick to win a world record 23rd Group One win and her 31st consecutive victory in the Chipping Norton Stakes over 1600m on Saturday.
Happy Clapper and Unforgotten filled out the minor placings.
Winx jumped well and settled in fourth place as the leader Happy Clapper set a cracking pace to surge seven lengths clear.
Hugh Bowman got to work a bit sooner than normal. Knowing the ability of Happy Clapper, he made his move before the bend, but Winx had to wear the leader down gradually and for a just a second or two she looked in a bit of trouble.
Winx got into gear, however, and with 100m to run the race was over as a contest. She drew away for a two-length win, ridden hands and heels only, as always.
“Over five or six years, we’ve noticed the changes,” trainer Chris Waller said. “Comparing her to a person, she is a little bit smarter.
“She knows where the winning post is. She has become used to winning. She knows what she’s doing.
“I can see the sun going down, and hopefully we can get through two more races. She is a superstar. She is very, very special,” added Waller.
