JOE Soma Racing has confirmed the retirement of Michael de Broglio’s two time Summer Cup Champion and home-bred stalwart, Master Sabina.
“He’s been doing very nicely since he has been with us, but he is telling us it’s time, from a racing point of view” says Joe Soma.
Following on discussions between Joe and Michael, and assisted by Jonno Snaith, it was agreed to retire the 8 year old son of Jet Master, out of Michael’s Sportsworld mare, Sabina Park.
On considering his retirement, Joe contacted Geoff Woodruff who trained Master Sabina through all his career wins, including the back to back Summer Cup victories in 2015 and 2016.
Geoff and Carol were thrilled with the opportunity to retire their former champ, especially having only recently lost their Durban July winner El Picha who was also retired at their Randjesfontein home.
Apparently on arrival at the training yard, before going to the Woodruff’s stables at home, Master Sabina knew exactly where he was and walked straight into his old stable.
Joe said: “It is fitting that the Woodruffs will be re-united with their old campaigner and look after him in his retirement. I’d like to thank Michael de Broglio for entrusting Master Sabina to us for his last training stint. He is a wonderful character and it was a privilege to have him in the yard and to be able to make the call to let him retire. He’s done so much in his career and deserves a special retirement with all the love and carrots that he is likely to get!”
