OUT Of Your League, who at 45-1 caused a major upset to win the SA Derby over 2450m at Turffontein on Saturday, gave trainer Fabian Habib his first Grade 1 victory, writes JACK MILNER.
Ridden by Raymond Danielson, the gelding came through between runners to beat Shango by 0.50 lengths with 5-2 favourite Go The Greenlight and long head back in third. Fourth place went to Western Fort, who hung right across the course and finished on the outside fence, just 1.10 lengths behind the winner.
If anyone was looking for a genuine stayer in a field of class horses who were suspect over the distance, one might have found this son of Elusive Fort, who emulated the feat of his father with this victory. His two previous wins were over 2400m with another second over this distance and another runner-up berth over 2850m.
However, Out Of Your League had to survive an objection from Gavin Lerena who rode the runner-up but although there was definite bumping, the stipendiary stewards felt there was no enough interference to uphold the protest.
Habib was delighted with his first Grade 1 victory. Speaking of the winner, he said: “He’s an out-and-out stayer. I just gave him a prep run in the Derby Trial and never did much on him going into the race.”
The stable-elect was Youcanthurrylove, who went off at 3-1, but he did not appear to see out the distance. “I told the owners I gave Out Of Your Leage a place chance. But, thank God, at least it’s a winner from the stable.” – TAB News.
