The Vaal straight course has an interesting eight race meeting today and all races are down the straight, where high draws tend to have an advantage.

In the first race over 1400m Red Carpet Girl improved last time when stepped up to 1200m and is looking for further. She has a nice high draw and champion workrider Joe Gwingwizha gets the ride.

Right Choice is a moderate sort but the Mike de Kock yard can do little wrong at present and this is a suitable trip while workrider Anathi Feni will be attempting to make it a second win in just his third career ride.

Scottadito is a big daughter of Master My Fate and has placed in all five starts from 1000m to 1600m. This could well be her best trip and Erin-Lee Watkinson had two wins in workrider’s races in Cape Town. Flame Flower is a first-timer from the Paul Peter yard by What A Winter out of a Fort Wood mare whose two wins were over 1600m and 1700m respectively. Super Tanaye should relish this step up in trip on pedigree. In the second race over 1400m Averni Warrior has run two fair races over sprints and from a nice high draw should enjoy the step up in trip coming from a yard who bring them on slowly but surely.

King Arthur has improved since the blinkers were applied and finished five lengths behind the smart Safe Passage over 1600m last time. Muzi Yeni can help him overcome a tricky low draw. Displace Time has shown ability too and should start improving.

The third race over 1200m is the first leg of the Pick 6 and might be won by a first-timer as those who have run have not shown a lot. Namibsroos is improving and if building on his third place finish over this trip last time he could go close with in demand 2.5kg claimer Rachel Venniker aboard.

Vuitton is a first-timer by Vercingetorix and is a full-sister to the consistent Parallax, who made a fair debut over this trip when beaten just 1,60 lengths and has since won once and been placed seven times from 1600m to 2000m.

Risky Business is an interesting first-timer being by Querari out of the multiple Grade 1 winner Dancewiththedevil, although hopefully she knows more about it than her half-sister Devilish Dancer did as the latter was well beaten in her first two starts before winning at long odds next time out.

Belle Ombre is a first-timer by Capetown Noir out and is a half-sister to the fair two-time winner Galaxy Raiders.

Rockingthetimeaway has run a couple of fair races and those who are going to risk putting only raced runners in the Pick 6 with the first-timer rule in mind might want to consider including him.

In the fourth race over 1000m Back To Basics ran close to the ultra consistent Eyes On Tiger, who was on overdue winner over this trip last time, but his low draw could be a concern. True Brit was just 1,75 lengths behind Back To Basics last time. Miss United States was caught wide around the turn last time and is capable of better, although she has a low draw. Volluto has a reasonable draw of seven and if repeating his start over this trip on September 9 he has a shout. King’s Spear has run some fair races and beat Volluto narrowly the last time they met over this trip.

In the fifth over 1000m Midnight Badger has fair pace and runs all the way to the line so looks the one to beat from a nice high draw in his first attempt at the minimum trip. Catchgreenlight bounced back with first-time cheekpieces on last time over 1200m and he should go close from a nice high draw if repeating that effort. Samoa makes most appeal of the rest from a high draw with Khumalo up.

In the sixth over 1400m Spartan Warrior went close over this trip at the end of last season and has his third run this season off just a one point higher mark and he has a reasonable draw. Funky Music is perfectly distance suited and ultra consistent so should be in the shake up from a middle draw. Golden Spoon has good recent form over this trip and represents a yard in flying form. Super Excited has a potentially tricky low draw but looks to have plenty of ability and should handle step up in trip. Supreme Dance has a nice high draw and has shown plenty of promise. Gavin Lerena is an interesting booking in his seasonal reappearance. Psycho King is capable of popping up from a nice high draw.

In the seventh over 1400m Whorly Whorly should have come on from his last start and over a more suitable trip is drawn high. Venniker’s 2.5kg claim will help too. Captain Hindsight has proved he stays this trip and is drawn on the right side. Tuscan Winter is promising and on pedigree should enjoy this trip. Anne Boleyn is in good form and is distance suited and drawn high, although it is always tough against the boys. Stone Cold is 1.5kg better off with Captain Hindsight for 1.40 length beating.

In the last race over 1600m Just Fabulous looks to be a useful horse in the making and on pedigree should relish the step up to this trip and she has a nice high draw. Ancestral Prayer is also drawn high and this scopey sort can be involved from a high draw. Hothciwitchi has plenty of ability but this is her second run after a layoff and she has a tricky draw. Lee Express should have come on from her last two starts and goes well for Dennis Schwarz. Rock You won well last time but does have a four point merit rated raise to contend with. – David Thiselton
