CHAMPION jockey S’Manga Khumalo has been confirmed to ride star three-year-old al Sahem in the R4,25-million Vodacom Durban July over 2200m on Saturday, 1 July.
Khumalo regained the ride after Anthony Delpech had been booked to ride Nightingale for Wilgerbosdrift, who retain his services as its Number One rider. He is in fact unbeaten on the SA Derby winner, having won a handicap over a mile on Al Sahem before Delpech took over regular riding duties.
Khumalo became the first black jockey to win SA’s most famous race when he landed the spoils for Al Sahem’s trainer Sean Tarry in 2013 – the combination will be confident of making it a double from Draw 1.
Anton Marcus has been declared for the ante-post favourite Edict Of Nantes, while Callan Murray is a surprise booking for last year’s winner, The Conglomerate, and Gavin Lerena will fly in from the UK to ride Brazuca.
