GRANT van Niekerk was quickly off the mark at Sha-Tin in Hong Kong on Sunday. Van Niekerk won his very first race on the eight-year-old Triumphant Jewel and scored another success in Race 10 on World Record.

Triumphant Jewel ran on late in a 1000m contest (worth the equivalent of about R1,7-million) to score for trainer Jimmy Tin, also in his debut season.

World Record is trained by Tony Millard and was one of the outsiders in a race worth the equivalent of R3,5-million.

It is well known that owners and trainers in Hong Kong look for the “luck” factor in a new jockey and this is exactly the start Van Niekerk would have wanted.

Callan Murray made his entrance in Race 2, but finished unplaced on Sunny Orient. Van Niekerk also failed to feature on Wonderful Chaser.

The race was won by another South African though, as multiple Hong Kong champion Douglas Whyte streaked clear to win by four on Le Panache. –extracts from TAB News.
