AT his age, SA’s own super jockey Piere Strydom would probably rather be staying at home watching movies on a Thursday, but he has been booked for five rides at the Vaal’s Classic track today and this could be significant as three of them are for his friend, Louis Goosen.

Goosen seldom puts Piere on his horses when they don’t have clear money chances and he quipped from his training base at the country track this morning: “When Piere came off a break last time he rode some work for me and showed that he was fit so I gave him a few mounts. He’s back from a spell on the bench again, but I’m not so sure about his fitness this time.”

Goosen spoke briefly about his runners, giving Angie Bee (Race 2), a “small eachway chance and Winter Breeze (Race 5) a “good eachway chance”.  He said: “Winter Breeze races off a recent run, I’m not one for the second run after a layoff-theory with sprinters, though this run comes a bit soon. She should run well though.”

The form of Captain’s Girl (Race 3), speaks for itself, she looks ready to win and Goosen confirmed that the stable expects her to go close. “Captain’s Girl should win, though it is a Maiden field with a few first-timers.”

“Striker” also has a ride for Barend Botes in Race 4 (Tiger’s Legacy, one for swingers), and he gets on Alec Laird’s Hermoso Mundo in Race 7 – one that is fancied by a few newspaper tipsters.

Racing starts at 1pm.
