ONE of South Africa’s greatest ever, Variety Club (VAR), is now 12 years of age, and in fine fettle in retirement at the White Queen Equestrian Centre, next to the Val De Vie Estate in Paarl, Western Cape.
His caretaker Danielle Ehlers (photo) told: “When he returned from racing overseas he had a spell at Klawervlei Stud and then he spent a year running around a bit with Joey Ramsden’s string at Milnerton, where he was naughty and biting everyone. I rode him there for the period, and then decided to take him.
“He’s calmed down, he’s like a puppy now and I’ve been jumping him at White Queen. This is a world-class facility managed by a professional show jumper and Variety Club is getting all the love and attention he needs.”
