THE only thing that South Africa’s racehorse grooms love more than racing is Soccer, and competition was fierce in the annual Grooms Soccer Tournament sponsored by the Racing Association and staged on the infield at Turffontein Racecourse on Sunday.

Last year’s winners, FC Milano (Randjesfontein grooms) were one of six teams that contested the tournament and with most support around the pitch they went in as early favourites.

The teams were split into two groups of three with newcomers Isizwe (Catering) and Equimotion (RA) as well as a team from the Vaal among them.

With R7,000 on offer to the winning team, players threw everything they had into the knock-out games and eventually the final was decided between FC Milano and new kids on the block Equimotion, who got the upper hand in an exciting final beating the favourites by 2 goals to 1.

Racing Guru (@RacingGuru), who provided the photos and reports, sent us the Equimotion team sheet which shows “Bheki” as manager, “Patrick” as coach and “Stimpi” as assistant coach – congratulations and spend the 7k well!

David Dlamini, coach of FC Milano, accepted R3,000 as second prize and vowed to have his team back in fine fettle  for a rematch next year.

Medals were handed out to the winners and the runners-up.
