Erik The Red underlined the quality of this three-year-old crop with a hard-fought win in the Grade 2 CTS Cape Merchants over 1200m at Kenilworth.

Officially 0,5 kg under sufferance, the only sophomore in the line-up came through with a sustained late burst and held off fancied stable mate Rio Querari and rank outsider Constable.

“He was the best sprinting two-year-old around, and probably the toughest juvenile i have ever trained. It’s not easy after a layoff,” commented Justin Snaith.

This capped off a great day for Varsfontein Stud, as earlier another of their Captain Al colts Malmoos had taken the Avontuur Stud Concorde Cup.
