CAPTAIN Lars, the amazing South African-bred gelding who races in the UK, posted his 24th career win when he won the Betway Selling Stakes over 1000m on the all-weather at Newcastle on Monday evening.

The Klawervlei-bred, who won 11 races in 2018 alone, is the UK’s king of lower division sprint handicaps and has become the proverbial ATM for trainer Archie Watson and regular jockey Thomas Greatrex. He has won the equivalent of R2,45-million.

Captain Lars is a tremendous advertisement for the durability and soundness of the South African thoroughbred. He also won or was placed in ten of his 12 South African outings, and scored his biggest local triumph when victorious in the Listed Drum Star Handicap.

One of the dozens of stakes winners by Klawervlei’s deceased champion sire Captain Al, Captain Lars is a full-brother to former Equus Champion Always In Charge.
