HIGHLANDS Stud, part of Ridgemont, announced on Sunday that they have acquired the Southern Hemisphere covering rights of leading stallion Canford Cliffs (IRE), to join the farm’s stallion ranks in 2018.
Canford Cliffs was a five-time Gr1 winner and a top two year old himself, racing in the super-strong era of Frankel, Rip van Winkle and Goldikova.
He won from 1200m – 1600m, starting at two with the Gr2 Coventry Stakes over 1200m at Newbury, and followed at three by victories over 1600m – the Gr 1 Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, and the Gr1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. He was the rated top 3-year-old miler in England & Ireland in 2010.
At four, Canford Cliffs was equally impressive, winning the Lockinge Stakes over 1600m and the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, beating Goldikova. He was second to Frankel in the Sussex Stles of 2011, but achieved the title of champion older miler.
At stud, Canford Cliffs sired 35 first crop winning 2YO’s in 2015, 2nd only to Kodiac. In all, he has already prouced in excess of 175 winners, including Gr2 GAIN Railway Stakes winner Painted Cliffs (IRE), and Gr3 winners Al Jazi, Most Beautiful and Princess Asti.
“We are extremely excited to have acquired a horse of this calibre who has already produced international Grasded winners,” said Huighlands in a statement. “As Canford Cliffs’ Champion trainer Richard Hannon Snr. quoted, ‘He’s the best I’ve ever had.’ ”
With Royal Ascot commencing this week, Canford Cliffs(IRE) is no stranger with him winning Graded races here for three years in a row, two Group 1’s and one Group 2.
