BELLA Sonata (photo) is one to watch during the KZN Champions Season. The Gavin van Zyl-trained daughter of Silvano caught the eye running on well for second to Nother Russia in last Saturday’s Gr1 Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes and she’s being targeted at the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes on Vodacom Durban July day.

The consistent Bella Sonata has won 3 of 16 starts with eight further places to her credit, but did appear to run a margin above her best form in a Listed and the mentioned Gr1 feature respectively, in her last two outings.

Van Zyl explained: “Bella Sonata is a good filly, but she used to pull up battling to breathe and that was something that naturally affected her performances on the track.  We had a wind operation performed on her late last year and it was successful. She’s had four runs this year and she’s been breathing fine after each race.

“We were chuffed with Saturday’s run. She was drawn 16 and came from stone last to get a clear second in a strong field.”
