MIKE and Carol Bass won the first Gr1 Mike and Carol Bass Champions Cup over 1800m at Greyville on Sunday with up-and-coming star Marinaresco, on the occasion of Mike’s retirement.
The event was suitably celebrated with Graeme Hawkins of Gold Circle and the Bass stable’s top patron Marsh Shirtliff paying tribute to the retiring trainer who unexpectedly fell ill last year and had one leg amputated after an infection had set in.
“I can’t tell you what this man has done for me,” said Shirtliff. “That includes picking wonderful horses (like Marinaresco), year after year!”
Bass said: “I am really humbled to have had this race named after Carol and I. My thanks go to the Gold Circle Chairman, Board and staff. This means an awful lot to us.”
Known as the gentleman trainer who always had a listening ear to the press, Mike thanked the media for their support.
The Bass runners will now officially compete in the name of Mike’s daughter Candice Robinson, his long-time assistant, with his son Mark continuing his association.
“We are not really going anywhere. Everything will continue. I have every confidence in Candice, Mark and their team, they are up to scratch and they know what to do. They will carry on in the same vein.”
