ABASHIRI hasn’t won since he clinched the Triple Crown with his Derby success in April 2016, but he’s shown clear signs of a return to his best and on Saturday, almost two years after his big moment, he could return to winning ways in the Gr2 Colorado King Stakes over 2000m at Turffontein.
Abashiri ran on well to take second to Cascapedia in January’s London News Stakes over 1800 and he hasn’t raced since, but trainer Mike Azzie told Turf Talk on Friday: “He is in a good space, fit and well. We’re aiming at the Champions Challenge in May, in which Corne Orffer will also take the ride, and we’re expecting a bold showing, he is looking good.”
With a spread of only 2.5kg from top to bottom in this competitive field, Abashiri should certainly be a factor and it will be nice to see him winning again.
