Champion mare Almond Eye will retire a nine time Gr1 winner after taking out Sunday’s Japan Cup at Tokyo racecourse.
The champion Japanese mare was having her fifteenth and final run in todays Japan Cup where she was joint favourite with Contrail but the more experienced mare was given a perfect ride from jockey Christophe Lemaire and was simply too good for her rivals.
Almond Eye was brought to the middle of the track by Lemaire early in the straight giving her plenty of time to run down runaway leader Kiseki and she was good enough to hold off the challenges of previously undefeated three-year-olds Contrail in second and Daring Tact in third.
