MARKETERS take a bow! This unique advertising banner was created by Ian Todd and Keith Russon’s Backworth Stud prior to last weekend’s KZN Yearling Sale and not surprisingly drew plenty of attention.

It’s unusual, colourful and imaginative and shows the spirit of one of the smaller, boutique-type studs in South Africa, going places.

Backworth is a 100-hectare farm under Kikuyu with post and rail fencing situated near Eston in the Southern KZN Midlands. The property was purchased from an old British family in 1993. In 1999 Todd and Russon began development of an infrastructure aimed at enhancing this environment for the holistic breeding and raising of quality Thoroughbreds.

Backworth takes a lot of pride in their graduates, a few of their passed unsold at Sibaya, but they did finish up 6th on the Vendors List with nine foals sold, including Oratorio filly Love Theme, sold for R450,000.

The Backworth honour roll includes Gr1 winner Chocolicious, who was exported to Australia and recently produced a Frankel filly bought by Sheikh Hamdan for $610,000 and earmarked for Mike de Kock’s yard.

If you fancy the Backworth artwork like we did, you’ll enjoy a stroll around the pages of their website. Go to
